May 2000 Daily News

Wednesday-May 31 ,2000....6-2 Junior All State Point Guard Brandon Mcknight/South Bend Lasalle visited Purdue today with his High School Coach Mark Johnson .The Purdue staff told him that he is their #1 Recruit at PG and they hope he will meet with his parents and plan to commit soon.Coach Keady will not be able to observe Mcknight until the July 8-31 NCAA open evaluation period.Mcknight played informally with the Purdue team and came away impressed with 6-10 John Allison and 6-6 Rodney Smith. He thought Joe Marshall sure had healthy vocal cords,Parkinson was a good passer and Best was solid.Cuonzo Martin is a maybe coaching hire when he graduates so he was able to play in the pick-up game. Mcknight liked Cuonzo and even told IBN that "I will probably end up at Purdue."He must meet with his parents and discuss their original plan of visiting schools after the July open evaluation period.Iowa State,Bowling Green,Indiana State,Northern Illinois and Butler covet Mcknight while dozens of High Majors desire to see his game in July.Stay Tuned !

6-6 195 pound senior(SF) SINISA KOMATINA/PARK TUDOR.The European exchange student from Belgrade is tremendously skilled but in need of strength and refinements before he competes in NCAA D1 or D2.He has been offered by Lewis of the Great Lakes Valley and JC'S at Glen Oaks and Danville. We expect Lincoln Trail JC to make a "late push" before Sinisa meets with his parents this weekend to discuss his options....

6-7 230 LB. Junior post Derek Lawrence/Northview attends the school that IBN all time favorite Kenny Rowan starred at in 1989.The state's tenth all time leading scorer suffered a career ending knee injury while at Indiana State. After reconstructive knee surgery, he graduated with a criminal justice degree and currently is an Indiana State Police Officer..Derek Lawrence is a "load" in the paint. He blocks out every time and he finishes strong down low.A gifted student with a 3.5 GPA and 1210 SAT, Derek is determined to raise his SAT well over 1300.Yale wants the big guy to visit and undoubtedly every academic oriented Midwestern Institution will be vying for his services. 6-7 210 LB. Junior Zach Reuter/Martinsvillehas played well this spring blocking shots, rebounding and draining face-up jumpers to 15'.His college interest from recruiters has been NCAA D1 mid major with no real favorites from Zach.IUPUI may lead as they are close to home with the allure of both a prestigious Indiana or Purdue University degree. 6-6 245 lb. Junior manchild Jackson Atoyebi/Culver Militaryhas "wowed" gymnasiums all across the state this spring with his huge explosive play- blocking shots, catching alley oops and finishing in the paint with opponents hanging on him.Xavier,Bowling Green,Indiana State,Southern Illinois are his current suitors.6-7 235 LB Jr. Brandon Turner/Anderson Highlandhas the best low post moves in the class of 2001.Both left and right hand paint shots are equally effective for Turner. His size 18 feet make him appear lumbery but he is so deceptively quick with the ball in his hands. His long arms are of a 6-9 athlete as he routinely is over the rim with both hands for offensive putbacks. His potential is huge once he begins an extensive weight program..Turner is receiving widespread mid major interest and this weekend he will be visiting Alabama Colleges..

Tuesday -May 30 , 2000

5-11 junior Greg Durm/Elwood is a valedictorian and capable of low-major rigors....He reports that his Indiana Select team lost in the first round of the Columbus,Ohio tourney this Memorial Weekend....Durm besides his academic brilliance is also steady as a point leader. He is a NCAA D1 capable guard .Hopefully he will receive the necessary exposure in July in spite of possible future first round team losses similar to this weekend.....Both Harvard and Princeton are serious for the solid student athlete.....Time will tell

Darmetries Kilgore of South Bend Washington is now a highly sought after shooting prospect .At 6-5 205 lbs.He visited Purdue today and is neutral on colleges if he chooses the NCAA...The shooter has tested his trade at Tyler JC and he is open to either the NCAA orWHATEVERleague will enable himself to develop and play his game..

Monday-May 29 , 2000
This Memorial Day,IBN salutes all the men and women that fought for America in foreign wars....Without their sacrifice and service , we would not enjoy the many freedoms that many of us take for granted....NBA players would not be able to bounce a ball for millions of dollars if they did not work in a free capitalistic society....Remember today the real Heroes of America are not on Hardwood courts -- they are in your neighborhoods..They are your aunts ,uncles,grandfathers-They are American Veterans of Foreign Wars and IBN Thanks each and everyone for so bravely serving our great country!!!

FT.WAYNE-Fourth Annual Spiece Memorial Day Run/Slam.Tom Spiece's beautiful 8 court Fieldhouse is the new home of all the Gym Rat and IBA tourneys....The maple wood courts and the shock absorbent air panels in the base employs the finest craftmanship of it's kind in the world....62 midwestern teams played in three divisions:9,10,11 grades...Tourney qualifying pool play took place on Saturday with all teams advancing to Sunday's single elimination tourney.....JUNIOR DIVISIONCHAMPIONSHIP:Ft.Wayne Warriors 81 Randolph Sports (WI) 59..MVP-6-3 Dewayne Belcher/Ft.Wayne North. This talented small forward is a strong lefty in the paint that really "gets after it". His quick explosive jumping and clever post moves were hard to contain this weekend..IBN had previously known little about Belcher.INDIANA PREPALL-TOURNEY :6-4 Trey Essex/Ft.Wayne Harding,6-0(so.)Tony Bollier/Leo,6-0 Cris Brunson/Ev.Reitz,6-4 Brandon O'leary/Ft.Wayne Dwenger,6-4 Matt Ogle/Ft. Wayne Carroll,6-6 Gabe Miller/Ft.Wayne Carroll,6-2 Brandon Mcknight/South Bend Lasalle,6-0 Jake Wiltrout/Plainfield,6-7 Zach Reuter/Martinsville,6-3 Dewayne Belcher/Ft. Wayne North.SOPHOMORE DIVISION CHAMPIONSHIP:SPIECE PISTOLS 76 WISCONSIN 70...MVP Tyler Best..The rangy 6-8 small forward drained 22 in the final game but his smothering defense in the paint was the key to the division championship....INDIANA PREP ALL-TOURNEY :6-8 Tyler Best/Lafayette Catholic,6-2 James Banks/Ben Davis,6-3 Josh Gomes/Indianapolis Heritage Christian,6-8 Kevin Cates/Marion,6-3 Geoff VanWinkle/Forest Park,6-2 Kyle Anslinger/Evansville Reitz,6-2 Reid Sakel/Southridge,5-9 Kyle Cox/Blue River Valley,6-1 Kyle Robbins/Delta,5-10 Anwar Jones/Ben DavisFRESHMEN DIVISIONCHAMPIONSHIP:SPIECE CENTRAL 61 ST.LOUIS FLYERS 59...MVP-6-5 Parnell Smith ...The long armed ,big body post ruled the paint with strength and and itimidating presence rarely seen in a freshman..Every opponent who cared to flash the lane ,was introduced to Parnell's pectoralis major, minor and hip flexor muscles...As good as the"PAINT WARRIOR"was-truly his game must be extended to the perimeter if he is to play high major college hoops like brother Rodney(Purdue)..We bet he does as he is vastly improving quickness and agility...The good news is he has 3 prep years to make the perimeter transition...If his mature appearing frame has two more inches left,All high majors will come knocking...INDIANA PREP ALL-TOURNEY:6-5 Parnell Smith/Pike,5-8 Zach Decatur/Cathedral,6-4 Kristoff Kendrick/Lafayette Catholic,6-1 Brandon Evans/Lawrence North,6-5 Deondre Peyton/Lawrence Central,6-2 Sonny Troutman/Brebeuf,6-6 Adam Liddell/Dekalb,and 6-5 eighth grader Ryan Baker of Indianapolis St.Pius.

Matthew Denison is reporting that 6-2 Jake Elder/Providence has signed with Chaminade University of Hawaii..The Southeast Indiana shooter scored 23ppg this season and has been a prolific small school scorer for three seasons at Providence...

MERRILLVILLE-Junior All State guard 6-1 Lonnie Randolph tells IBN that his SYF team finished 5th in Jerry Watson's Columbus Ohio shootout....He states that coach Jim East has been talking to recruiters but his father and himself will be personally making several unofficial visits this summer to the interested schools....Basketball is his priority but his talented quarterbacking skills in football also create options for Lonnie....Son of former State Senator and current East Chicago Judge Lonnie,Sr.,Lonnie's legal guardian is Frank Borom of Merrillville....Lonnie Sr. was formerly a star athlete at East Chicago Washington in the late sixties...Merrillville super sophomore 6-8 Justin Johnston is the state's top soph. center prospect and his time on the court this spring has greatly elevated his game....In spite of senior small forward Jake Argenta,Johnston played sparingly in the post depleted Merrillville program....

CHAMPAIGN,ILLINOIS-Parkland College JC signs 6-8 230 lb. Matt Goodin/Lawrence North'99.The lifelong Lawrence Township resident saw little time his senior year at LN behind move-ins 7-0 John Stewart(deceased) and 6-5 John Miles(state high jump champion/Indiana University/Taylor University).Matriculating to Anderson South Carolina JC,after arriving on campus his coach left for other opportunities....He attended classes at IUPUI last year while in search of another JC opportunity....Time will tell if Goodin is able to add hand strength and lower body muscle mass- but his agility, court speed, ball handling ,passing and game sense is of Division One caliber....

6-7 220 LB. Derek Wetzel/Leo 1999 has taken classes at IPFW . He did not complete the clearinghouse info. on time so he could not play his freshmen year...He apparently wants to resume his college career so another big body is available....We thought that Wetzel could be a solid D2 power forward after preps . He is open to all situations.Realistically we thought IPFW would be good for Wetzel but he now wants to move on...The hoops he misses must be considered since IPFW is going D1 with little interest from Wetzel....

Friday-May 26 , 2000

MODOC-6'8" BOSKO KALINIC /UNION HIGH SCHOOL Will sign his letter of intent with Manchester College....The multi-versatile Croatian has decided to stay in America and play collegiately for the NCAA D3 school....Averaging 17 ppg. and 8 rpg., Kalinic has been described by veteran coach Everret Gates as being potentially the finest player he has ever coached ..That is saying a mouthfull considering Gates has sent several athletes to college -including 9 NCAA D1 players....The Kalinic signing is huge as Bosko is easily in the Missouri Valley next year if recruiters are doing their homework...Only Evansville had sense enough to follow our Kalinic report months ago even though they did not need his small forward game....Kalinic to Manchester should be no surprise as no one in NCAA D3 works harder than Head Coach Jamie Matthews....Coach has worked, scrapped and fought for everything he has ever received since his prep days at New Washington High School... A self made player , at 5-8 he had no business in D1 but thru hard dedicated work-he became a good player at Ball State....This work ethic translated into excellence at Manchester that resulted into a runnerup finish in the Heartland Conference....The Heartland annually features strong guard action but the post play leaves alot to be desired....With Manchester returning their guards and adding the 6-8 forward Kalinic, mark them down as a favorite for the league title...1999 Frontier grad Eric Shutz left Manchester last fall before he ever got started....At 6-7 250 lbs. ,he has always been well skilled and clever enough to position his large frame correctly....The bad news for Heartland opponents is that he returns to Manchester...With Shuttz and Kalinic, IBN feels Manchester is on the verge of "breaking into the National NCAA D3 elite ". Stay tuned !!

SPIECE SWEEPS ANDERSON PREP SHOOTOUT TOURNEYS....Formed in 1996 by Wabash businessman and Sportsman Bill Hensley-The Spiece mission has been to provide the most developmental experiences possible for Indiana youth while also exposing them to scholarship granting colleges...The Anderson tourney was formed 20 years ago by Anderson High booster Doc Foley and was since adopted by Anderson University Athletic Director Barrett Bates....Never before this 2000 season has a Club won all age divisions-- but this year Spiece accomplished that dominating feat....Champs at 9th grade ,10th grade and recently 11th grade- Spiece swept Anderson through organization and great team play....The program is planned in October so to prevent contact during athletes school seasons...Developing competitiveness in athletes is where an amateur summer club can really complement the high school program....Athletes in the amateur clubs are faced with the best from the state, midwest and country...Against most of the best juniors last weekend ,the Spiece group basically " took the championship " thru desire and effort....EMAIL us if you know of many teams that won tourneys after being down by 8 points with 40 seconds remaining in regulation....That is exactly what Spiece did when they Destroyed a Jim Reamer "select" team with their 20-0 "40 SECOND regulation" and OT championship finish... If you have ever witnessed a more dominating championship win, Email IBN so we can report on the performance of those athletes....The Memorial Day 80 team National Spiece tourney begins tonight at the beautiful new Ft. Wayne Spiece Fieldhouse...

Thursday-May 25 ,2000

SOUTH BEND-South Bend Washington High School in 1999 featured one of the best shooting guard prospects we had seen in years ...6-4 Darmetries Kilgore had all the tools physically as a long armed, explosive 26'range shooter ..He would dunk on you off the dribble or drain the long jumper...Of course his talent did not merit Indiana All Star status...Academically sub par, Kilgore took his game to Tyler, Texas JC where he has also grown physically to 6-6 205 pounds....On fire the entire year, he scored at 19 ppg and grabbed 5 boards pg. while shooting 45 % from beyond the arc...Kilgore tells IBN that NBA scouts have advised him that he may very well be ready for their league next year after his sophomore season at Tyler....Collegiately, He also is high on Purdue and will visit them May 29 with South Bend Lasalle JR. PG 6-2 Brandon Mcknight... Bill Bayno's UNLV program and Bob Huggin's Cincy Bearcats are also serious suitors for Kilgore's services...Cincinnati recently answered many recruits questions with the contract extension of coach Huggins....Darmetries indicated those three schools are finalists if he chooses the NCAA ..He will not make any decision until after his final year at Tyler Junior College this coming 2000-2001 season... Stay Tuned as we follow the career of Mr. Darmetries Kilgore

GREAT BEND,KANSAS-5-10 Eric Bush/Anderson '98 will graduate this July from Barton County JC with three years of NCAA D1 eligibility remaining....Remember , Eric signed with Illinois State after High School but did not stay long enough to attend the football homecoming...Averaging 15 ppg. and throwing 10 dimes per game at Barton,Bush has visited only Fordham University this May 4 ..The Fordham visit was not his choice but a thing manufactured by people close to Eric.... He has always told IBN that he seeks a high profile school that will allow him to push the ball and " run things " in the open court...Cincinnati rumors were squashed once Kenny Satterfield decided not to turn Pro....Bush will make decisions after his July graduation from Barton....He could elect to make a Barton return and have two NCAA eligibility years remaining;or, sign with a NCAA D1 in late summer that has a three year opening for a point guard extraordinaire ...Time will tell for ERIC BUSH... He assured IBN that he will keep us updated....Stay Tuned....

MICHIGAN CITY-Annually Coach Bob Falls has had to fight the urban problems of poor committment and academic apathy of the merged school population ....Elston and Rogers High Schools combining together on paper equal a power house but games are not played on paper as East Chicago Central has annually proved once they merged the mighty Washington/Roosevelt schools...By merging two schools -all you do is eliminate 12 varsity positions and create " heated community " dissension concerning the final roster positions...School boosters that had an identity with the school are no longer interested..6-4 Ricky Gooden signed with perennial NAIA National power Bethel...6-5 Chris Ikpoh is academically strong and a late bloomer in basketball.Chris will either attend Chicago State or Oberlin College...6-5 William Hurt may end up the best Michigan City player in four years...A two guard with great athleticism, Hurt is headed to either Lincoln Trail JC OR Joliet JC for academic work and physical development...6-6 big forward Mark Bishop will attend Vincennes...The 'Wolves of Michigan City have a 6-8 240 lb. JR. Center named Paul Kopanski..The big guy has drawn serious attention from Miami,Ohio and Bowling Green...Skilled and Northern Indiana's only true big man in Class of 2001 , Kopanski was unbelievably NOT selected for the Jr. All-State team!!! Only in Indiana Basketball where it is more important to have a powerful "lobby" than it is to haveTALENT!!

Wednesday-May 24 , 2000

HUNTINGTON-IBNtalked with 2001 Mr. Basketball candidate Sean Kline Monday evening..He stated his decision between Indiana and Notre Dame is "coming soon but he has no set time for the announcement"...Interested in studying Business, he is impressed in what both schools offer...Both schools are "running neck and neck " for his services with no leader at this time...He likes everything about Indiana and Coach Knight is why they are a final two choice....His father prefers Indiana but he only wants what Sean thinks is the best choice...His mother and step-father do not favor Indiana but they also just want Sean to choose the school where he is most comfortable with.."Weighing the positives and negatives of each school " is what Sean states he is currently dealing with...He loves the upside of Notre Dame now that summer teammate Chris Thomas /Pike has committed there....Kline and Thomas are close friends and arguments can be raised that Kline may very well follow Thomas to South Bend....We want to emphasize that Sean did not lean one way or the other as we talked....We do believe the decision will be made in a couple weeks at the latest because one thing he did indicate was---He is very fatigued with publications calling him every day and sometimes twice a day...Realizing that Sean "unwinds" as an avid Fisherman of Catfish ,and that "open gym" is his main stress reliever at this point---IBN predicts that the answers Sean are looking for will become clear to him during one of those activities....IBN will go on record stating that Sean Kline is "hands down" the only High Major small forward prospect in the class of 2001;and, unbelievably some idiots that live in Indiana do not think that the perimeter versatile Kline is a small forward college prospect....These are the same people that think Ft.Wayne Concordia's Andre Patterson is not the best power forward college prospect in the class of 2001....Andre Patterson's only question is if he will play in Indiana next year or live with mom in California....He is currently the Class of 2001 legit High Major power forward prospect and he rapidly is obtaining skill to move in the small forward rankings...Patterson is young and will not be 17 until his senior season....If you enjoy "wishy washy ramblings" from self-serving spineless "talking heads " then you need to never again visit IBN....We will always "shoot straight" or not at all !! We appreciate all daily viewers that seek the best in daily Prep or College News....But again ,if you are seeking a sugar coated report about a hometown hero that can't play -you are wasting your time at IBN....We strive to only report the truth about the best players in America---INDIANA PREP BASKETBALL PLAYERS....BIG NEWS THURSDAY!!!

6-2 Aaron Brothers/Evansville Memorial has committed to play College Basketball at Indiana Wesleyan University....Memorial's two sport All State star will sign his national letter of intent this Friday.

Appalachian State University assistant coach Houston Fancher has announced that they have signed Ft. Wayne Snider's 6-0 Terry Collins to a national letter of intent...The Boone, North Carolina NCAA D1 program previously was successful with former Anderson Highland star Tige Darner and annually they recruit Indiana strong....Coach Fancher states ,"we are pleased to sign a player of Terry's caliber so late in the signing period."Coach Fancher also thanked IBN for reporting on Terry's last minute academic qualifying....After watching Collins since he was 14 years old, one thing that he has always done is "finish strong"--and that certainly holds true with his buzzer beating academic performance....

Hickory Husker's Leigh Evans reports that longtime Kokomo High School coach Basil Mawbey has resigned in order to accept the Lewis Cass Head coaching position....A surprise without question but the state champion coach has yearly been mentioned for annual statewide job openings...We wish the veteran mentor a happy/heart healthy run with the Kings !!!

Tuesday-May 23 , 2000

Purdue University has officially offered 6-8 sophomore Tyler Best /Lafayette Central Catholic....The rangy small forward has received a great deal of high major interest from Syracuse,Kentucky,Ohio State and others but Purdue is the first to offer a full athletic scholarship to play in The Big Ten....With two more years of High School remaining,we expect Best to wait and see how his next two July evaluation periods "play out " The success of Tyler's brother Travis will undoubtedly have influence on Tyler's final decision...Remember Travis transferred to Purdue last season from Louisville as a walk-on....Also, At this time both Best and 6-8 Sean May /Bloomington North are further advanced than any posts in the Class of 2000

6-5 Jr.Dennis Coutee /Jeffersonville is IBN'S top ranked shooting guard in the Class of 2001....Monday evening he tells IBN that he has played little with Bloomington Red's amateur Club due to Prom and SAT...He stated he has been active in the "playground wars " of Southeastern Indiana and that he will be playing this weekend in the Nike Club only event that is to be held this weekend in Louisville....Dennis stated that he pays little attention to recruiting ..He prefers to rely on Coach Broughton to "weed" through the inquiring calls and mountains of mail....No one has offered yet but Indiana ,Iowa ,Louisville ,and Indiana State apparently are showing a tremendous amount of interest... Dennis Coutee plans to make his final choice in September....Stay Tuned!!!

6-8 Jared Adler /Adams Central is a rarity in Prep sports these days...His bio includes a perfect 4.0 GPA ,Eagle Scout badge,Band , Choir ,Drama and perfect gentleman...His hobby is Basketball and his relentless post banging and physical presence has propelled him to the top of The Class of 2001 center prospects with 6-8 Will Caudle /Warren Central...No offers yet but Notre Dame, Iowa ,Bowling Green ,Indiana State and Marquette are all very much in the "running for his services ". Jerod states at this time ,"he and the schools are in the process of learning about each other ." He will not make a choice before September.... With the aforementioned attributes stated as the truth, how in the world could Adler be omitted from the Junior All-State team when there is no size in the North?? What gives ?? The selections in Indiana merit no rhyme or reason....Zach Randolph is the best player in America yet is not Indiana's Mr.Basketball due to teenager mistakes....6-8 Jerod Adler is either the first or second best post in the Junior Class and he does not make the Junior All State Team ...Mistakes ? Apparently Adler's only mistake to this point has been to attend "no media exposure " Adams Central because the worst thing you can call Adler is " a choir boy that will be the school's class of 2001 valedictorian ".ONLY IN INDIANA HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL !!!!

6-2 Wes Carmony /Indian Creek was the state's second leading scorer this past season at 29.3 ppg....After considering NCAA D1 interest from Troy State , Oral Roberts , and University of Missouri at Kansas City--Carmony decided to play College Basketball at Indianapolis Marian College....6-4 Monte Crowder /North Central '98/Western Wyoming Jc has also signed with Marian College

Monday-May 22 ,2000

ANDERSON UNIVERSITY JUNIOR PREP SHOOTOUT....Located on the beautiful small college campus in Anderson ,Indiana, Athletic Director Barrett Bates organized 28 teams of the state's top junior and sophomore Amateur Basketball Clubs for their annual prep shootout...An invaluable evaluation tool for IBN, we were able to witness preps from Evansville to Ft.Wayne in competitive action....No game was more competitive than the championship game!! The old saying that "the game was much closer than the score indicates"-certainly held true in this Championship Game....The statewide Spiece Gym Rats program was matched with Central Indiana's "Select" Club....Unbelievably the "Select" led 83-75 with 40 seconds remaining in regulation...At that point 6-0 Treymayne Peterson /East Chicago ,6-2 Brandon Mcknight /South Bend Lasalle and 6-4 Leon Petty /Cathedral all three decided to take the game in their hands and "rip/steal" their way to force OT..If a Petty jumper at 2 seconds does not "rim out",then Spiece unbelievably scores 10 points in 40 seconds and seals the win in regulation....Overtime proved all Spiece as their 12-0 run in the extra three minute period, capped off one of the most dominating 20 point turnarounds that we have witnessed at any level of Basketball....Final Championship Game score :SPIECE GYM RATS CENTRAL STARS 95 INDIANA SELECT GOLD 83....

ANDERSON JUNIOR SHOOTOUT TOURNEY MVPwas 6-2 Brandon Mcknight /South Bend Lasalle...Averaging 24 points and 7 assists per game this weekend ,Mcknight demonstrated his "at will" penetrating pull-up shooting ability..The total control, stop and go playmaking ability of Mcknight is so enhanced and accelerated when you add his tremendous "no look" passing court vision ability...A true "Gym Rat" in the sense that he is goal oriented and he plays everyday--Not just when the school offers open gym three days per week...Players play and Mcknight can be found battling Jaraan Cornell ,Dametries Kilgore and Lincoln Glass most every evening after Study table at Dave Magley's gym. Purdue ,Iowa State,Bowling Green and Indiana State all highly covet Brandon Mcknight.... ...6-6 245 lb. Jackson Atoyebi /Culver Military Academy proved far too strong in the post this weekend for all challenges...Blessed with huge soft hands and a dynamite vertical,Jackson averaged 19 ppg.,14 rpg. and 4 block shots per game...His effortless "alley oops" and low post "throw downs" were in a class of their own...Just as huge as a football tight end-Atoyebi will have serious decisions to make for college athletics....Basketball wise he is the total power four man package with huge potential....Relying on strength now to score, once Atoyebi diversifies his arsenal--he will be an unstoppable mid-high major prospect...Bowling Green, Indiana State, Evansville and Southern Illinois have all had enough recruiting common sense to investigate Atoyebi's basketball potential.....OTHER ALL- TOURNEY PERFORMERS THIS WEEKEND:6-7 Brandon Turner /Anderson Highland ,6-7 Zach Reuter /Martinsville ,6-0 Treymayne Petersen /East Chicago ,6-1 Blair Crawford /Kokomo ,5-8 Otis Shannon /Cathedral ,6-4 Jeremy Peckinpaugh /Shenandoah ,6-4 (soph) Brandon Cole /Ben Davis, 6-2 Marcus Husband /Penn....Next weekend is Memorial Day Weekend and The best Indiana prep action will be at the new Spiece Fieldhouse in Ft. Wayne, Indiana...64 midwestern teams from St.Louis,Milwaukee ,Detroit and Indiana will battle for the Memorial Day crown....

Friday-May 19 ,2000

6-9 Martin Brothers/Arlington '99/Southeastern Iowa JC. Averaging 17 minutes per game on the NJCAA NATIONAL CHAMPS-The '99 Indiana All-Star attracted interest from Iowa,Illinois State,South Alabama, New Mexico, and Southern Illinois....The big fella tells IBN that he is leaving the National Champs in search of a program that can utlize his small forward offensive skills..Olney,Paris,Wabash Valley,Coffeyville are possibilities...Stay Tuned..

5-10 Gerald Alexander /Arlington '98/Kellog JC...After spending one year at the Michigan JC, the speedy playmaker has signed with Wabash Valley JC(Ill.)

Eugene Smith of Ft.Wayne Southside High School has signed with Tri-State University of Angola,Indiana..

Evansville Memorial High School's Basketball and Baseball Star Aaron Brothers has recently visited Depauw University and Indiana Wesleyan..Brothers should decide soon where he will play college basketball..

Former Jeffersonville coach Mark Bixler tragically succumbed to cancer several years ago...His son Kyle has been using the roundball for his education and now is close to deciding upon his final two years of College Basketball...First attending University of Missouri-St.Louis,Kyle then transferred to Olney,Illinois JC where he was the team leader...Currently he is deciding upon Mckendry College in Lebanon,Illinois or University of Charleston(NCAA D2)in West Virginia....

MARION-The old Marion Bennett High School is the site of Mitch Sturm's inaugural MVP TIP-OFF CLASSIC...Tonight's Tip-off is 6:30 P.M. and game time Saturday is 4 P.M. Thursday-May 18 , 2000

Kentucky Wesleyan signs 6-2 Shooting guard Jeff Mcgowan of Castle High School(Newburgh)...The Great Lakes Valley NCAA D2 school should be commended for believing in the talented Mcgowan...Like most teenagers ,Jeff experienced some "growing pains" his senior year...Very strong and explosive in the lane area, Jeff may help Wesleyan at the small forward position as well as at the two guard slot...

Danville Area Community College signs more current and former Indiana preps...Previously we had reported that DACC had corralled Eric Durrett(Arlington)and Virgil Akers(Ben Davis '97)....Coach John "Shot Dr."Spezia has now signed Gillous Darden /Northwest ,Josh Burns /Eminence while also resurrecting the once bright careers of Chet Washington/Ben Davis '97 and Sheddrick Crawford /Tech '97....DACC returns sophomores Sherman Foster /Arlington ,Kevin Nance /Manual ,and Eric Sowder /Southmont....Sherman Foster has been chosen for an Illinois JC All-Star team that will travel to the Islands of Antigua to play Carribean National teams...."Proofs in the pudding", no one does a better job educating Indiana preps in the Junior College ranks than Danville Area Community College (across the Central Indiana Western state line in Danville,Illinois)....

ANDERSON-6:15 P.M.is Tip-off time Friday evening for Anderson University's annual Junior prep amateur club tournament...27 teams are entered this year of which several are "playing up " as sophomores...IBN's woefully underrated Jr.point guard Bradley Warner/Anderson will be leading the Wilson Warriors ....The 5-8 scoring Warner is top 6 in the junior class as a PG but somehow we overlooked him ....After viewing his game at Arlington last weekend-NEVER again will IBN overlook his talent....The team to beat will be defending champs Illinois Hawks....Basically the team is comprised of Chicago's Westinghouse High School Varsity that annually gracesUSA TODAY'S NATIONAL PREPrankings....Remember Head Coach Chris Head was suspended much of last winter for coaching his team in the summer....Illinois State Athletic rules allow the High School team to play together all summer but the Head Coach can't be involved ...The Hawks will put on a show in Raven Arena....

MARION-The old Marion Bennett High School gymnasium will play host Friday evening for The inaugural MVP TIP-OFF CLASSIC ALL-STAR game....Many local and statewide senior preps will be participating....Unsigned 6-8 George Wilder /Mississinewa will be playing in the two day event...Event organizer Mitch Sturm has a luncheon planned in addition to the Friday and Saturday games....Sturm can be reached for further event details at: 765-662-7263

Wednesday Afternoon...MUNCIE-Ball State's next Head Coach is Tim Buckley...The Marquette assistant and former BSU asst. to Ray McCallum was annouced today as the Cardinal Head Coach...Michigan State assistant Stan Heath was also a finalist for the position....Being familiar with Indiana and Midwestern recruiting ,we expect the personable Buckley to do an outstanding job for BSU...A tireless recruiter known for attending to details ,Buckley is also the academically oriented leader that Athletic Director Seger was seeking in her next Head Coach."Buckley is a person that will not only make the athletes good basketball players but also better people"....Since Buckley was instrumental in the signing of current Cardinals ,we expect Lonnie Jones,Josh Murray and Cedric Moodie to all remain in Muncie and not seek transfers...Previously Buckley also was The Head coach at Bemidji State University in Minnesota....

Business as usual in Bloomington!! IBN has basically not been interested in the Bob Knight story for the simple reason that we have witnessed first hand his impact on the University and the Hoop worshipers of Indiana...Three national championships and 98% player graduation rate of four year participants?? Who does better ??After 28 years at the University -how can any credible group punish him for allegations made against him years ago.??IF YOU ARE VIOLATED BY SOMEONE--YOU EITHER ACT IMMEDIATELY AGAINST THAT PERSON-or you are a silent partner with that person !!If you are fired then you take action when you are fired ..If your human rights have been violated then you sue to protect your rights....What you do not do is cry foul when you think the coach is primed to be terminated... That was the case here as we saw it --not to mention the fact that elected and appointed administrators would be accountable if they dismissed the popular coach without serious cause for recent incidents... IBN Publisher Reg Tisdale first met Knight when Reg was a twelve year old camper at The Indiana Basketball School..Asking Knight how to correctly shoot a left-handed lay up turned into a "dance lesson of footwork" that Reg never thought was necessary until he tried it for himself...The lesson was habit forming as Knight forced Reg to repeat it accurately 10 times before lunch..Tisdale's next encounter with Knight was apologizing to him for "throwing up" during the defensive drills..At that time Reg was ready to leave early from camp but coach Knight explained that quitting would be the easy way out and Reg would look back later and regret the decision ....Knight's fundamental teachings were the only way athletically mediocre Tisdale was ever able to make the Warren Central High School Varsity...Make this jump rope your constant companion were the words from Coach Knight at camp..."You can improve running speed and jumping only so much but your first step and change of direction can be greatly enhanced with dedicated rope work."That speech led to record sales of jump ropes.... Tisdale's next encounter with Knight was in 1979 as a freshman in Knight's coaching of basketball class....Coach was present for every class and spoke on many subjects other than basketball that helped the neophyte freshmen...His "elephants and rabbits" Time Management dissertation was awe inspiring for freshman as they have no idea how to manage their time...Learning that as students one had better tackle the large important projects first was very important lesson for Freshman... Years later we met again with Coach Knight when he was basically selecting Greg Graham of Warren Central....Graham immediately said yes as did most chosen recruits from the Class of 1989....Greg was a target of Indiana after he dominated all other Indiana preps in Amateur tourneys....Much of that class hype and interest was generated from the criticism Knight received for including son Pat in That Class....Coach Knight also preferred Ron Bayless/Warren Central that year instead of Todd Leary but he chose to go with the academic reliable choice instead of a non qualifying athlete....As recent as 1997 we should have seen his irate caustic side when we attended Cam Stephens official visit to Indiana.....Shockingly while coach Knight was" making his pitch ,"Cam picked up a Hoop Scoop off Knight's desk and began reading ....One would think this rude inattention on Stephens part would be cause for a volcanic outburst from The General, but coach just calmly asked Cam who he thought in the History of Indiana's long list of NBA players -were ready for the League before they attended IU...Cam correctly answered Isiah Thomas while Tisdale said Mike Woodson...Knight complimented Stephens and corrected Tisdale by stating Woodson was too slow and could not shoot well enough until his senior year at Indiana...We say all this only because we have seen the personable and brilliant side to Bob Knight...We are not close with Knight or the Indiana program but we sure as Hell are not hypocritical enough to judge the man on CNN without ever meeting him or viewing an Indiana practice....Yes !! That is precisely what other publishers of High School News in Indiana did when the Neil Reed story went worldwide.. We hope coach can follow the directives set forth by Miles Brand if for no other reason than to preserve his emotional and spiritual well-being... The program will continue to thrive for years to come as Bob Knight marches closer to Dean Smith's career win record...INDIANA BASKETBALL IS BOB KNIGHT !!

St.Joseph's College of Rennselaer signs MARVIN SMITH of Merrillville High School....Head coach Dave Balza has stole three Division 1 prospects from Northwest Indiana this season with the signing of 6-0 mega-athlete Marvin Smith...Previously he raided 6-6 Jake Argenta /Merrillville and 6-0 scoring machine David Hanger of North Newton...The Great Lakes Valley NCAA D2 Conference had better take notice as St.Joseph's is now prepared to contend for the league Championship...."Balza Ball" is on the RISE in Rennselaer !!!

May-11 we reported that 6-0 combo Terry Collins /Ft.Wayne Snider had qualified NCAA D1 at the last minute...We have now learned that 6-2 shooting guard Sean Gillespie of Arlington High School has now also qualified for NCAA D1 per his coach Larry Nicks...Both Sean and his athletic teammate 6-0 Glen Keller qualified just recently....Keller "sits on the rim " with his vertical and he is a big stopper on defense...Gillespie is mid to hi major D1 because of his skill...At Colorado BCI last summer he made the exclusive All-American team ..Sean drains threes to 23' off the dribble or he will dunk in traffic after he beats his defender...Terry Collins and Sean Gillespie are huge NCAA D1 steals this late May 16 date !!

...INDIANAPOLIS-CHRIS THOMASof Pike High School has committed to Notre Dame !!! After visiting Stanford this weekend the All-American combo guard has chosen The Fighting Irish....The biggest recruiting catch in Matt Doherty's young regime,Thomas is the playmaking leader that the Irish have sorely needed...Chris had also narrowed his choices to Michigan State and Indiana University....Most people believed Chris would choose a program where the ball would be in his hands from day one....There is not a program in America that needs his leadership more than the "guard hungry" Irish of Notre Dame....The question now remains if The Thomas decision will intice AAU buddy Sean Kline of Huntington North to also committ to ND ?? Sean has currently gone Fishing this evening and is also considering the embattled Indiana University Basketball Program as well as Notre Dame....DECISION SOON..

INDIANAPOLIS ARLINGTON HIGH SCHOOL-"WHO's NEXT INVITATIONAL"....The championship was won for the second year in a row by Municipal Gardens 74-73 over the Indy Warriors....Leading the game most of the way by 10 points, remarkable was The Warriors performance considering their team is all sophomores while the Gardens entry is all juniors...The Gardens won state AAU last season as sophomores-but this game needed a manchild performance from 6-4 small forward Aaron Patterson /Ben Davis in order to "come back" and seal the victory....Patterson literally willed his team to victory in the fourth quarter...For years Aaron has been a drop step dunking workhorse in the post but we now report his perimeter shooting is triple threat legit to 19 feet....Adrian Dantley has always been our description of "Giant" Patterson ,and with continual development at this rate he will have a chance to shake all "tweener" labels and become a true wing player...Qualifying academically should be his top priority with this semester ,summer school, and his senior year all providing him plenty of credit opportunity to raise the core GPA...Tournament MVP this weekend was "hands down" Aaron Patterson from Ben Davis High School/Municipal Gardens...."WHO IS NEXT INVITATIONAL" ALL-TOURNEY TEAM listed by height, name, grade level and High School: MVP-6-4 Aaron Patterson,11,Ben Davis...6-0 Terren Wilson,11,Warren Central...6-3 Justin Cage,9,Pike High School...6-4 Blake Schoen,10,Benton Central...6-3 Allen Miller,10,Marion...6-2 Antwan Alexander,10,Arlington...6-4 Bryant Dillon,11,Tech...5-10 Nick Johnson,11,Western Boone...5-10 Scott Strahm,10,Ben Davis...5-8 Matt Comparato,10,Brebeuf....Tournament Director Gary Betts once again did a great job of organizing a showcase of Indiana's top 9-12 grade level talent!....

Sunday-May 14 ,2000

INDIANAPOLIS ARLINGTON HIGH SCHOOL-"WHO's NEXT INVITATIONAL"- Now that the tournament qualifying preliminaries are completed, 12 teams advance to the single elimination championship round...The 9:00 A.M. Games will feature Antwan Alexander/Arlington and Greg Stone/Lawrence Central...Both the high flying jump shooting sophomores are playing extremely well...At Belzer Middle school,Alexander threw down a VINCE CARTER caliber dunk, then next time down drained a 23 footer that swished the net before his feet returned from orbit... The 10:30 game features the state champion Indy Panthers and all world 6-4 Robert Vaden..."DARTH" is unbelievably gifted for an eigth grader and could easily start for most Varsity teams...Pike High School is Vaden's future school and former Pike Indiana All Star Dave Gadis is Vaden's legal guardian..... The 1:30 Bye games feature talented juniors Aaron Patterson/Ben Davis,Chris Hill/Lawrence North,Will Caudle /Warren Central, Brandon Mcknight /South Bend Lasalle, Jackson Atoyebi/Culver Military and Jake Wiltrout/Plainfield....Final Four games start at 3:30 with the championship game at 5:30...

Friday Evening ....JUST IN FROM MUNCIE...IBN has learned that Athletic Director Seger has narrowed her choices to former Cardinal assistant/ current Marquette assistant Tim Buckley and Michigan State assistant Stan Heath...Both outstanding candidates and both will return to Muncie next week for final interviews...Buckley knows the local scene much better than Heath and Tim has been a Head Coach at Bemidji State in Minnesota...Heath is obviously a hard working assistant or Tom Izzo would not have had him aboard at MSU... Ball State will apparently have a new coach in place by the end of next week...Hopefully this will keep the mass exodus of players as Lonnie Jones and others have been close to leaving..

The Anderson University sophomore prep tourney begins tonight with 24 teams of Indiana's finest competing....If the best of the Class of 2002 are not in Anderson then they more than likely can be found at Arlington High School competing in"WHO's NEXT INVITATIONAL."

Friday Morning.May 12 ,2000

The Ball State University Head Coaching position for Mens Basketball has certainly turned into a "closed shop situation " as far as Athletic Director Andrea Seger is concerned.. What Hiring director of a mens basketball coach in America does not take Rick Majerus phone calls or opens the hiring process to all impressive prospects...?? Andrea Seger of Ball State athletic training background obviously does not want anyone from Majerus era or anyone from Hunsaker problems.....She would rather interview untested high major assistants from Ohio State, Kentucky , Michigan State and Arizona...Only Tim Buckley of former Cardinal employment is receiving serious consideration.....Regardless of her big time approach to hiring a coach, she must also be accounted for firing her chosen Ethel Gregoey .Robin Markey and footballer Bill Lynch....When will stability be established in Muncie ,Indiana ????NO TIME SOON OBVIOUSLY !!

MICHAEL FRAZIERchooses John Logan Junior College...Charleston's 25 ppg. combo guard scorer confirmed with IBN previous reports that he had signed with the Carterville,Illinois JC....Unbelievably, Frazier drew little interest from national junior college programs in spite of his microwave scoring abilities and the fact he was arguably the finest senior in Southeast Indiana....

Thursday Afternoon at 4:00 P.M. 6-6 Michael Shelton called IBN to report that he has chosen to attend Bellarmine College on a full athletic scholarship....Citing the closeness of the Louisville College campus to his Jeffersonville home ,Mike chose the NCAA D2 Great Lakes Conference program with Anderson University a close second....We believe Anderson was Shelton's favorite choice but the D2 financial aid offer from Bellarmine was hard for any NCAA D3 to match....

Thursday-May 11 ,2000

Class of 2001 Junior Rankings have now been mailed to all of IBN'S Subscribers....If you as a subscriber have not yet received your copy of Indiana's Top 140 Senior To Be Prospects ,then please contact IBN immediately....To subscribe to IBN, and receive the only Indiana player rankings that America's top programs pay for --is easy, simply complete the online form and return it with $36.00

DAVID HANGERchooses nearby St.Joseph's College in Rensellaer,In..... North Newton's all time leading scorer who as a junior dumped 57 one game in tourney play ,has chosen to play in the NCAA D2 mighty Great Lakes Valley Conference....Perfect for the fast paced coach Dave "Balza Ball",Hanger is a steal for St. Joseph's.Hanger is not going D1 only because he DNP in the July college exposure period....A can't miss Missouri Valley type mid-major combo guard ,Hanger should be joined soon by another mid-major prospect who also DNP last July ..That is of course 6-0 Mr.Everything Marvin Smith of Merrillville....Eliminating summer basketball college evaluations will benefit no one more than St.Joseph's.....Since future college exposure will be all but eliminated by the NCAA, St.Joe's will annually steal the many D1 prospects that Northwest Indiana produces...

TERRY COLLINSof Ft.Wayne Snider has officially now qualified forNCAA D1 BASKETBALL...Recently recording a 2.6 core GPA and a 860 SAT, Indiana's one or two best senior combo guard has now achieved the necessary academics....Collins tells IBN he is open to all D1 opportunities that open up late each Spring....Snider's all time leading scorer at 1593 points is a 6-0 strong 185 pound total package at guard....Argue Brody Boyd is better this season but few other arguments will stand the test of a debate....Eastern Illinois,Central Michigan and Eastern Michigan should all be possibilities as well as Gardner-Webb...IPFW offer still stands and that remains an outstanding opportunity....The availability this late with the talent of Terry Collins is huge recruiting news for all mid to high major NCAA D1'S....STAY TUNED...

6-7 NATHAN MESHBERGER/South Adams has an offer from St.Francis in Ft.Wayne,In. ..He also is contemplating a walk-on at Ball State or attending Junior College in Illinos.....Mega skywalking Ricky Gooden /Michigan City has narrowed his choices to Bethel College and St.Xavier of Chicago...6-6 Mike Shelton /Jeffersonville will decide soon between Bellarmine and Anderson University....

Scott Hicks is the next Head Coach at Cathedral High School...The former Cathedral and collegiate star will shortly be named the next coach of the private school Class 3A power....Outstanding candidates for the job included former coach Tom O'brien,Park Tudor coach Ed Kelly,Hall Of fame director / long time Noblesville mentor-Dave Nicholson and Lafayette Catholic state champion Chad Dunwoody....Irish Administrators were in a can't lose situation with that group of outstanding coaches ...Hicks reportedly wants AAU coach Tom "Red" Taylor to be his top assistant....With Leon Petty,Otis Shannon ,Mathias Kiwanuka , Jeremy Trublood and Ronnie Hayes all returning-The Cathedral Irish must be considered a state champion contender....The Scott Hicks era begins at Cathedral!!

Wednesday-May 10 ,2000

The Corey Stokes Paris JC committment yesterday afternoon has been the hot topic in recruiting circles the past 24 hours since he has been pulled in so many directions from so many different angles....Late Tuesday evening we learned of more committments from Indiana High School Basketball's Class of 2000..

6-0 JAMES FORD /CHURUBUSCO /TRI-STATE

6-1 BRANDON ZEIDER /TRITON HIGH /TRI-STATE

6-4 MIKE CORLEY FORT WAYNE HIGH /INDIANA TECH

6-7 JASON SCHULTZ /FORT WAYNE ELMHURST /INDIANA TECH

6-2 DWIGHT WILLIAMS /SOUTH BEND CLAY /LINCOLN TRAIL JC

Retired Indiana State Police Detective Gary Betts is the authority on Indianapolis amateur basketball...The long time youth volunteer and advocate annually hosts his "WHO'S NEXT INVITATIONAL" at Indianapolis Arlington High School this May 12-14 weekend....All tourneys are objective driven and Gary's purpose has been to provide competitve experiences for Indy clubs at an affordable entry fee price....24 teams of Central Indiana's top preps will tip-off Friday at 6:00 P.M....Final Four Championship action begins at 3:30 Sunday afternoon on the beautiful campus of Indianapolis Arlington High School...A minimal admission ticket price should now be charged at the door since the IHSAA ruled in favor of charging admission prices for non-IHSAA events during the school year....Passionate Indiana Basketball Fans should take some time this Mother's Day Weekend and observe Indiana's best 2000-2001 returning players....See You At The Game's !!

Tuesday-May 9 ,2000

East Chicago's Corey Stokes chooses Paris,Texas Junior College....After visiting the Texas JC this past weekend, Stokes announced to IBN today that he is committed to Paris....The 6-2 mega athlete finished his Indiana prep career as the senior guard prospect with the largest potential...Just last season he was primarily a rim rattling slasher...This season he pushed his triple threat to 23 feet...Always a fierce defender, we expect Corey to matriculate to The Pac 10 after his two year run in Paris....

Derek Bechtel /Edinburgh chooses Franklin College !! As IBN predicted ,Bechtel was favoring Franklin over Marian because someone convinced him that their Pre-Law students are readily accepted into Law Schools....Regardless, the 6-5 shooting splendid splinter will be draining jumpers for four years close to home....Here's hoping he will have the teammates to play the post so he can play his natural small forward position....IBN realizes the entire Bechtel family is relieved that their two year recruiting saga with insincere suitors is finally over....

6-2 Demetrick Gamble /Ft.Wayne Snider has chosen Lincoln Trail JC over a host of other junior colleges in need of his wing slashing scoring game....

6-6 SF Steve Reynolds /South Bend Riley (98)/Oregon JC has now signed a NCAA national letter of intent with Western Michigan University of the MAC....

The 2000SPIECE RUN-N-SLAM CLASSICat Purdue University was the seventh and last 152 team tourney that will ever be held at Purdue....In spite of the ridiculous rental prices charged by Purdue ,the Spiece group still wanted to host next years 8th tourney at Purdue....With 80 % of the top NATIONAL college prospects unofficially legally on campus ,one would think that a Gene Keady friendly administration would want the tourney on campus....If you as an Athletic Administrator could have every top recruit in America unofficially visit your campus ,how could you allow the tournament to leave over high rental rates ???? Now do you understand why Keady is the Big Ten's lowest paid Head Coach and why he was interested in the San Diego State Head position last spring ....

Monday Afternoon-May 8, 2000

Aaron Jillson chooses Depauw University!!! The 6-2 combo from Munster High School is Bill Fenlon's 7th committment to date and the most prolific at 24 ppg...Western Michigan,Eastern Illinois and Northern Arizona all continued to express interest in Jillson with hopes a scholarship would become available....Jillson capped off a magnificent high school career by becoming the school's all time leading scorer and leading Munster to the rugged East Chicago Sectional championship....

Sunday Evening -May 7 ,2000

Class of 2001 recruiting news from the Spiece Run N Slam.

Sean Kline talked to IBN Saturday and said that Notre Dame and Indiana are his favorites but he is not closed to other schools...Furthermore, Sean flat -out said he is not transferring to Marion High School despite all the rumors he said he also had heard....Others tell us his mother is against IU but Sean will make his own decision....We love his small forward skill at 6-7 215 lbs. as he was very good Sunday in defeat of St. Louis and in overtime loss to the 5 state all-star team of Run in Pump....IBN would only like to see the Big Timer pull a three and Dunk his layups instead of miss finger-rolls....Sean Kline is now Indiana's only High Major prospect from the small forward position....His college choice could be tomorrow or in April of 2001...The bottom line with the multi-talented Cline is ,Decision made when he feels most comfortable and certainly the Knight daily controversy is a huge factor....Any prep ,like Kline ,that considers IU with the very real possibilty of coach Knight's dismissal, certainly is serious about Indiana....Sean Kline was very good this weekend during" crunch time ." The Mr. Basketball race in 2001 may very well be a tough one to call between him and Chris Thomas/Pike....As always-Time will tell .Time sometimes changes things...

Chris Thomas of Pike High School is the real deal in Indiana as a point guard with both Brandon Mcknight(South Bend Lasalle) and Terren Wilson (Warren Central) also realistically vying for top billing....Thomas is #1 but he must continually perform.....The best for many years since 8th grade, Chris stands alone in recruiting and has both Stanford and Notre Dame tied for his top choice....Purdue is a long shot and second thought at best as Chris says Michigan State and Indiana University are both #3-4 choices....The THOMAS decision according to Chris may be before July or at the latest September....STAY TUNED !!!

6-2 Brandon Mcknight of South Bend Lasalle has been the target of all conferences by mail for quite sometime now....Purdue has now targeted Mcknight as their # 1 point guard prospect since Chris Thomas has basically eliminated the Boilers from his list of schools....Mcknight is a qualifier for most schools but he must raise scores for his hometown Notre Dame to strongly consider him -as they truly do want his services....Any armchair spectator that has seen Mcknight and current Irish guards perform, would agree that Brandon Mcknight is better now than the guards Notre Dame has....Bowling Green and Indiana State also are strong for Mcknight..Iowa State has offered....

6-8 Jared Adler-Adams Central/ is an all-time favorite of IBN since day one....Jared is the definition of " old school" ...At 6-8 215 , what will the perpetual specimen not do for his team to win ?? He is all world academically but low-mid major basketball wise...Time will tell if Adams Central's college prospect Adler will choose basketball in college....The valedictorian must choose full time effort towards basketball development to reach his vast potential....

6-9 Will Caudle of Warren Central has Purdue ,Michigan ,Syracuse ,Ball State and several other possibles.....Qualifying academically and doing things other than being athletic , tall and aggressive will be the question he answers by August 1 .Caudle is a good shot blocker and his hands are improving....

6-2 Kyle Hankins of Bloomington South is without a doubt high major as a shooter at his heigth and ability level....Very inconsistent in High School ,Hankins must have a good July to win that high major offer.....Today Kyle was on fire from three both off the dribble and off screens...

6-5 Dennis Coutee/Jeffersonville and 6-5 Ric Wyand/Franklin Central of the Red both chose to take SAT and go to prom and not return on Sunday.... To not play against St. Louis or Pump-N-Run when you should have and could have is a statement that you do not need to or the fact that this is not your priority......Prom or SAT when this is the biggest tourney in the spring?....SAT can be taken only nine or ten times after this date before college .The SAT was offered at two sites in Lafayette........Many athletes took the test-missed very little and then returned to action..Strange choices by two athletes that need their game pushed against top talent....

Warren Central's team MVP was Jr. Terren Wilson for obvious reasons but 'mate Will Caudle is chosen to the Jr. All-State team ???? Wilson is the Marion County tourney MVP but is not chosen to the all Metro team???? Just another illustration of how Indiana Basketball is polluted with political nonsense and unfairness..Just "dump on" all deserving participants with no regard for fairness and achievement ....When will Tom Mckinney be asked to coach the Indiana All-Stars?? Not qualified -Right!!! What does a coach need to do in order to be chosen.....See you tomorrow!!!

May 5 ,2000

The seventh annual Spiece Run-N-Slam Prep All-Star Classic Tips-Off tonight at 7:00 P.M. on the campus of Purdue University....152 Amateur Basketball Clubs From International and coast to coast American clubs will converge on Purdue University to strive for the pre - summer top July evaluation billing....Organizers are Tom Spiece of the statewide Spiece sporting goods stores and Bill Hensley of the Gym Rats -IBA program....Last year the tourney hosted 130 teams but this year explodes to 26 continuous courts in order for the 152 entries to participate....Teams choosing to not compete is a ridiculous statement as 25 to 35 remain on the waiting list....Mackey alone features the best preps in America at a good admission price--FREE...Championship games will be 5:00 P.M. Sunday and exciting grade level final fours to start by noon on Sunday...

6-0 Bryant Nortern /Jeffersonville..Bryant's father confirmed with IBN yesterday that Bryant has chosen the walk-on situation at Denny Crum's University of Louisville....

6-5 Monte Gordon chooses Southeast Missouri State....After attending both Bishop Noll and Gary Roosevelt(1997) High schools ,Gordon attended Valparaiso University one year and then chose to be re-recruited for college....Attending Junior College in Illinois,Gordon averaged 16 ppg. and 8 rpg. as he sought a different situation than champion Valparaiso University....After 2 high schools and now a third college ,IBN hopes Monte Gordon has found academic happiness at Southeast Missouri State University....

Depauw University adds two more to their 2000 recruiting class....5-8 point guard WES THORNHILL /Cambridge City and 6-4 forward KYLE ALLEN /New Palestine are the fifth and sixth Indiana prep seniors respectively to committ to Bill Fenlon's program....

Thursday-May 4, 2000

Frank Kendrick To Coach Gary Steelhead CBA Franchise ! Matt Youmans of THE MUNSTER TIMES reports that the former Purdue All-American and asst. coach has been named the CBA's Head Coach of the new Gary team....CBA executive Charles Bennett confirms the report but league owner Isiah Thomas must officially announce Kendrick's appointment....Purdue player from 1970 to 1974,Kendrick also played on the 1975 NBA world champion Golden State Warrior team....After a lengthy European playing and coaching career ,Kendrick briefly sold insurance in the Indianapolis area before assisting Gene Keady at Purdue the past ten years....Gary must market the Steelheads throughout Chicagoland and Northwestern Indiana....The personable Kendrick has all the leadership / salesmanship abilities necessary to build a viable thriving Professional Sports franchise....

East Chicago's 6-2 High Major Corey Stokes is visiting Paris Texas JC this weekend and Weber State University next weekend....With the NCAA'S new rules for non qualifiers ,Stokes is faced with big decisions....Go to Junior College for two years or pay his way in NCAA D1 the first year and now for the first time--not lose that first year of eligibility....The new rule states that Stokes will have four D1 years of eligibility remaining after the first "sit-out" year....Weber State is offering that scenario to Corey ..Purdue and USC also want Stokes to play by the new rule in their programs....Big decisions for the eighth Division One prospect from East Chicago in three years

Lynnville. The talented 5-10 duo of Jim Funkhouser and Jeremy Broshears have been invited to walk-on at Evansville....The sleeve wearing Purple Aces just increased team intensity tenfold ..Those mighty mites from 1999 State champion Tecumseh "really get after it".Their state championship game performance versus Lafayette Catholic was one of the finest in state history!!Tecumseh's Funkhouser and Broshears epitomize everything that is good about Indiana Basketball...

1999 Indianapolis Brebeuf grad, 6-5 230 lb. Krunti Hester will transfer from Marquette University to Lamar University and be rejoined with former Marquette coach Mike Deane

Hammond.Purdue University-Calumet begins a new era with the hiring of Gary Hayes....After finishing 13-17 last season ,The Lakers head coach Larry Liddle retired after 19 years....Coaching in six decades ,Liddle has also had stints at Hammond Clark and Marion High Schools....Highly successful in his capacity as Lakers women coach ,we expect Hayes to recruit Lake County urban schools much more aggressively with his assistant Grayling Gordon of East Chicago....The following area seniors have committed to play at PUC:

6-4 Brandon Williams /Gary Wallace

5-10 Warren Chumley /Gary Roosevelt

6-2 Marquiece Woods /Gary Wirt

6-6 Eric Beard /Highland

Three Junior College transfers returning home (Lake County natives) to attend PUC include :6-7 Ron Nixon /East Chicago /Mercer(Ga.),/South Suburban College ,6-2 Taurus Banks /Hammond Morton / Northwest JC ,6-2 Andrew Hall /Hammond Morton /Northwest JC....We have always thought PUC could yearly be a National NAIA D2 contender due to the fact that area athletes could be attracted to earning a respected Purdue University Degree...The direction of the program the next few years will be an interesting observation....Time Will Tell

Gary Lew Wallace won the City championship this season due to a strong senior class....6-0 PG Reuben Gonzalez directed the uptempo club...Outstanding academically ,Gonzalez desires to walk-on at Valparaiso....Few walk-ons ever play but Gonzalez seems determined to be one that does....Can't miss in NCAA D2, there is interest from Mt.Olive in North Carolina....Gary's best player this season was 6-4 Andre Clark.Very versatile and aggressive ,Clark's biggest obstacle will be off court hurdles..If he clears the hurdles he will attend Jucos either at Kankakee or Arizona Western....The hardest playing Hornet is 5-8 Willie Sease....Proving he could score in bunches--Sease is a powerfully built explosive athlete at 180 lbs....We always thought football was his best prospect but to play at depleted Lew Wallace is a rough proposition for a skilled player...Sease probably will attempt another sport he is talented in-Baseball....With family in Memphis, Sease will probably attend University of Memphis and walk-on the baseball team....The fourth Hornet senior, 6-4 Brandon Williams will play at Purdue-Calumet.

6-0 mega athlete Marvin Smith /Merrillville is probably the most complete player in Indiana....Never playing July college exposure hoops has greatly hurt Marvin's options and that is just fine by St.Joseph's coach Dave Balza...The veteran NCAA D2 coach plays a freight train fast system that is perfect for Marvin's talents...Marvin has not committed yet as he is considering NCAA D3 per his coach's recommendation ....Fellow Pirate 6-6 Jake Argenta has previously signed with St.Joseph's in nearby Rennselaer,Indiana...Just 40 minutes south of Merrillville,St. Joseph's plays in the Nation's toughest D2 Conference-The Great Lakes Valley....

Wednesday -May 3, 2000

Ever wonder why Indiana voters stayed home yesterday in the all important state primary ?? They feel as if they have no say in the process or that their vote is meaningless...Sound familiar in the world of Indiana Basketball?? With 1100 mailed ballots from the Indianapolis Star- News ,less than one third were returned..Yet-the passionate sinless voters of which numbered over 200 ,chose to not vote for America's best player--Zach Randolph /Marion..The State Champion's legend continues to grow with every game he plays....The MVP easily of the IHSAA four class system, Zach was without question the finest player in Hoosierland this season....He plays in the Mcdonald's Classic and is MVP...He is NIKE SUMMITT MVP and totally dominated the Kentucky Nike Derby Classic with 39 points and 24 rebounds...A man amongst boys was the favorite description we heard about Zach....Leading his team to yet another victory enroute to MVP--Zach was very humble in his domination and wanted to credit his 'mates...If they should be mentioned it should be as having the sense to pass Zach the ball....Every time Zach exited , the opponent made a 10 point run...When IBN presented Zach the Player of The Year Award for the States top player --Zach was incredibly humble and stated that "he would qualify with the SAT score " .When asked about entry to NBA draft--Zach winked and said," C'mon "TIS", you really think I am ready for that" ....After wishing him well and hoping he does what he thinks best--Zach slapped IBN'S Publisher on the back and said to call him for possible NBA draft entry news...We are happy to announce that longtime HOOP SCOOP guru Clark Francis finally named Zach the National Player of The Year..It took Francis one year to realize Randolph's supremacy but you must give Hoop Scoop credit for not being conned into thinking Jared Jeffries was the best Indiana player because he was Mr. Basketball....Hoop Scoop is yearly good at" keeping it real." Francis admitted that he did not believe IBN at this time last year when we told him Zach was Indiana's best player..All he saw was a heavier kid that was not focused on being in top shape--- but Zach was also not making any amateur team a priority...Zach at that time was being wooed by the NCAA elite and he was busy weighing each school's merits ...ZACH RANDOLPH OF MARION HIGH SCHOOL is the best player in America but judged the second best in Indiana....Only Possible in Indiana !!

6-4 John Taylor /Ft. Wayne South has previously signed an NCAA national letter of intent to Indiana-Purdue at Ft. Wayne...

Mark Drake /Shelbyville has accepted a full athletic scholarship at The University of Alaska-Anchorage....Mark's father Steve has resigned as Athletic Director at Shelbyville and John Heaton also retired as Head Basketball Coach....We expect the former Blue River Valley and current Highland coach Mike Wade to get the position....All you must do is watch a Wade team in action one time and you leave the gym impressed with how he prepares his available talent

6-5 Nick Gardner /Inpls.North Central has broken the hearts of many D2 and small colleges by opting for the humbling, no guarantee experience of walking on at Butler....

CHRIS WIGGINS TO GARDNER-WEBB UNIVERSITY!!

It's official ! The talented 6-5 Warsaw Tiger has chosen to play NCAA D 1 Basketball in the state of North Carolina....After visiting the University this past weekend,Chris conferred with his parents and Coach Rhodes today before making his decision....Gardner -Webb has officially entered NCAA DIVISION 1 and will be playing the likes of Virginia, Stanford and Murray State in the near future....Midwestern Universitys slept at the wheel in the recruitment of Chris Wiggins and Gardner-Webb has now taken the 4th Indiana prep from Hoosierland in four years....5-10 James Colwell/Scottsburg(1998)...6-5 Bruce Fields/Mooresville(1998) and 6-8 Matt Poynter/ Lafayette Jeff(1999).....Poynter as IBN predicted is becoming a force inside with strength gain....Midwestern recruiters unable to see Poynter's potential in High School should all turn in their phone cards and go PUMP GAS !!! Matt Poynter was and is daily solidifying our report of being a huge mid-major talent....

6-8 John Gergely /Speedway has decided to stop entertaing the NCAA D1 insincere interest and join the huge talented Depauw University annual Freshmen Class....

6-6 ZACH NELSON /WARSAW /HILLSDALE COLLEGE(Football)

GRACE COLLEGE announces three signings in addition to previous signee 6-3 Matt Springer /Heritage .....6-1 COREY SMITH/ Ft.Wayne Northside....6-0 CHRIS ERWIN /Eastbrook....6-6 MATT ABERNATHEY /Carmel(98)/Pacific University is also transferring back home to Indiana away from his twin brother Andy....The sons of Indiana Legend Tom Abernathey seem to be finding their niche in College Basketball..Head Coach Jim Kessler is certainly delivering the necessary talent with his Grace College class of 2000....

The Anderson University 9th grade tourney was won by the Spiece Gym Rats 99-37 over their fellow Club mates Spiece North stars....Sunday we reported on the virtues of the eventual champions and today we must ask for a North Star gut check and see if a pulse can be found....For Jawaan Turner,Dante Edwards, Larry Upshaw ,Troy Bly and Drew Barron to allow their team to be so humiliated ---A 360 degree re-examination of their rankings in Indiana must be done immediately....A 62 point shellacking is a huge red flag in terms of how talented any individual player from the losing side is....The will to win for any five supposedly outstanding players should be more than enough for victory or at least be competitive....Time Will Tell how these young men react to such a devastating defeat....
