Monday-July 31,2000
Team Virginia wins the 17-under Senior To Be National Championship !!
Boo Williams defeated Cincinnati AAU Black 51-46 for the 2000 crown..
We will report on the several Indiana team results as we receive them..Remember, this was the first year ever that any team in America with the $600.00 entry fee -could enter the National Championships..Teams from Indiana did not have to qualify for Orlando-they just had to "front" the Entry fee..Stay Tuned for the results of team perfomance and the daily recruiting buzz..

Wisconsin Randolph Sports Club Dominates The Summit City Basketball Festival..
Talk about some shooters !! These 'Cats make Indiana prep shooters look like brick mason...The amateur basketball organization operates from the Overalls capitol of the world-Oshkosh Wisconsin. They won the senior division 58-53 by defeating their instate rival Wisconsin Select..6-8 Adrian Tigert was the best player in the age group and far better than any Indiana prep post in 2001 class..He shoots the three and has every pivot move in the paint-known to man..Wisconsin-Green Bay,Wisconsin-Milwaukee ,Bowling Green and New Hampshire have all offered him.We expect the Big Ten to become involved late.
Wisconsin Randolph also won the the Sophomore To Be Division largely due to the on court coaching and playmaking of 4-11 105 pound Tanner Bronson of Nicholet High School. At first glimpse the kid appears to be the 9 year old mascot.Glance again and this potential Jay Burson has ripped your best guard .Throwing dimes and drawing fouls with ever perfect positioning is the tiny guy's forte. We actually thought a hard foul or two would demoralize their team leader.. This approach rocked Tanner for a moment until his teammates sent return messages in defense of their leader..The more Tanner was knocked around , the more he wore his "Scott Skiles mask."
Tanner Bronson is a champion that is so intriguing because of his production as a "squirt" sophomore to be... Utah coach Rick Majerus has told him at their summer camp that--if he grows to 5-8, they will offer him like they offered 5-9 Kyle Cox/Blue River Valley .Apparently, Majerus is now in favor of the solid small guard instead of the annual large guards he usually has at Utah...

The Spiece Pistols barely win the Junior Division Crown 56-52 over the Ohio Valley..
Talk about a War !!These two squads were even most of the game until the dormant 6-8 Tyler Best decided to aggressively attack in the fourth quarter for 6 of his 10 points...MVP of the age group was 6-8 Kevin Cates/MarionEvery rebound seemingly is his and he crashes the offensive boards with reckless fervor...He tells IBN that he has visited Ball State and Purdue..He has no favorites but did state that he wants to play in the BIG TEN.Mid-majors compare him to Adam Ballenger of Bluffton who has the perpetual limited role at Michigan State...We believe Cates to be Big Time High Major as we also felt Ballenger to be if given extended minutes between the lines..Cates told IBN that he knows he is getting stronger because he battled Zach Randolph in practice each day much better his Sophomore year than his Freshman season."Zach threw me to the floor every day when I was a freshman, but he only dropped me once this past season "Cates told IBN. Josh Gomes and Kevin Cates both finished with 9 points . James Banks and Russell Trudeau both chipped in ten points via slashing, hard nosed scrappy basketball. For Ohio Valley,Craig Schoen scored 9 with 9 assists,Anthony Winchester scored 10 and Matt Pait scored 10..Jeffersonville's Pait has emerged as the state's top Sophomore guard...Team Cambridge City played well reaching the final four..They defeated Indiana Select 68-67 in the final 8 behind the muscling of 6-2 center Donald Crawley/Richmond and the slashing scoring of top ranked guard Tyler Clevenger/Winchester..In final four play, Cambridge City had Spiece Pistols down by 14 before Kevin Cates and Russell Trudeau attacked the offensive glass with intensity..Markous Jewett/Richmond demonstrated shooting skill under fire and 6-3 Michael Lawson/New Castle is a very rangy, active ,aggressive combo forward...The first Annual Summit Basketball Festival was a huge success capped off by Spiece Founder and Sportsman-Mr. Richard Spiece awarding the championship trophy's..

Ball State recruit 6-8 Ronald Dokes/South Bend Riley has not qualified academically so he has chosen Lincoln Trail Junior College vs. prop 48 at Ball State. Ball State will also receive a huge D1 transfer that is 2002 scholarship eligible so there is now one scholarship in Muncie for 2001. They do have four grants to give in 2002 and Coach Buckley has been traveling the state in pursuit of those athletes.
Butler has tried to be tight fisted with their one scholarship in 2001 but we have learned that they covet Champaign, Illinois with that grant. 6-7 Kei Madison finally lands in Indiana. We hope so because what other program in America needs a Warrior more than Indiana ?? Indiana is soft as Charmin and not one big time point guard in America wants to be part of the zero tolerance program??
Indiana colleges moving at a frenetic pace are "stringing along" many good players. Recruiting latest each day!

Barry Collier hires Jeffersonville Coach Mike Broughton
The hugely successful coach at High Schools Hebron ,Castle and Jeffersonville has been named administrative assistant at Nebraska.Truly Broughton is qualified for the quantum leap in not only basketball experience but also as a certified Administrator..Regardless of any man's experience - a jump to Nebraska athletics from any high school will leave all daily news readers wondering what else was involved..Indiana Basketball is far removed from Nebraska..Barry Collier apparently wants a solid presence in Hoosierland and where else to start but the fundamentally solid South..Dennis Coutee is a high major prodigy of Broughton and since his summer did not excite the Indiana.Louisville and Iowa's as expected--we plan to see Coutee and possibly 1999 grad Bryant Northern to both follow their coach to Nebraska..Time will tell but you can believe new Nebraska administrative assistant Mike Broughton will be doing more than sceduling games and airline flights. The Cornhusker program needs at least 4 players in 2001...

Attention IBN Junior College Clients.
Again we have found a true high major 5-8 Mugsy Bogues type of player..This cat pulls on a dime to three and he also guards at 170 lbs. with a relentless physical approach..He is a true playmaker that will do all that is necessary to play on the court and win.A 1999 grad ,he has been in JC but came home to Indiana due to home sickness. Now he realizes he must go and play while his NCAA clock is ticking.
A late blooming 2000 grad with big hops and decent perimeter also seeks a JC due to the fact that that he never played school ball before this past senior season..This is a kid hungry to find a start. He could start next year in a small college program but he wants to test his potential for all levels..
We found a 6-5 40 plus vertical white four man that also seeks a JC opportunity..The springy fella bangs like "Mahorn" ,blocks shots, boards with fervor and scores off the slash. He has a GED in 1998 and he desperately wants a school where he can graduate and develop into a possible three man..The point guard is big time and the two forwards are hungry to play and learn collegiately.IBN clients should contact our office at 219-392-1586..
Truly all interested people with news or complaints should speak to us directly and preferably in person..Lame,gutless, spineless emails that are anonymous -are only deleted ..
Your passion for an arena of basketball is understood ,but what is the point of slandering people as you hide behind an IP address that can be traced ???

Xavier and Iowa join Purdue with Scholarship offers to Will Caudle
The rangy 6-8 rising power forward began the July college evaluation period with firm offers from Purdue,Bowling Green and Indiana State. Now after a solid academic camp at Mount Holyoke in Amherst,Massachusetts and more recently at the AAU NATIONALS-"The Big Fella " has acquired offers from Xavier and Steve Alford's Iowa program ..Illinois has also requested to have a chance at recruiting Will but they certainly are a late contender for his services... Recruiters tell IBN that Caudle is an exciting prospect because his potential is huge..Even if he does not improve skill wise, with natural progression he will always block shots and rebound with anybody...The kid runs the floor well and when his feet are set -he drains 15-18 foot jumpers..His 215 pound frame will easily carry 235 pounds .Any program that can wait a year or two for Caudle to blossom, is a program that conceivably could sign a special player in Will Caudle...Players like Caudle with huge upsides are forcing many high major programs to dump prospects that are better "right now" in favor of gambling on players like Will that could be better in the long run.. Warren Central coach Scott Heady states that, "both Will and playmaker Terren Wilson have work to do academically but they both have a chance to academically qualify for NCAA D1 if they are focused their senior year." Once Caudle returns from the Nationals, he plans to visit both Xavier and Iowa before he makes his final decision..We expect all three schools to compete on an even playing field since they are all relatively close to his Indianapolis home..Caudle's backup last season before his January bout with mononeucleosis was senior 6-7 Aaron Basham. A very late maturer physically, Basham has signed to continue playing collegiately at Anderson University. In two years Basham will be very good in the disciplined program that veteran mentor Denny Lehnus leads in Anderson.. Terren Wilson had the early offer from Northern Illinois with continued interest from Ball State,Bowling Green and Indiana State..
6-5 Warren Central Warrior Robert Boykin is rehabbing an injured knee from the Kentucky Hoopfest.Boykin is counted on heavily to defend, rebound and low post score for the defending Marion County champions..He should be strong by November.. 6-5 Aaron Conner is a Warren Township resident that has transferred from an area Christian School to the public Warren Central..All reports to this point indicate that (with extensive work) Conner is a possible varsity team substitute...Warren Central rumors that all athletes must possess a 2.0 GPA are all false..What the Warren athlete must do is pass 5 classes. If he does not have a 2.0 GPA, then he must attend a 2 hour study table 3 times per week .Sounds like a very fair policy and one that at least parallels the pass five class policy of the IHSAA.The Warren Central Warriors have a great chance to defend their County championship and legitimately contend for the Class 4A Championship..

Jesus Christ and Basketball
In our 15 years of watching prospects from the media seats of Dean Smith arena to the playgrounds of Cabrini Green Chicago, never have we ever walked into a playground where 50 men ages 17 -32 were engaged in Bible Study...That is exactly what took place when we arrived 4:30 P.M. yesterday at Pat Magley's Heroes Camp in South Bend..These men were not only present for the ballgames but 7 young men even dedicated their lives to Jesus christ before the first pick-up game...Incredibly we walk into a gym and instead of palm slapping we receive a request to be quiet from old friends Darmetries Kilgore and Cedric Moodie .These ballplayers love Jesus Christ before they take a shot..South Bend Washington All Stars Kilgore (99) and Moodie (97) hugged each other before the games but were murderous to each other on the court...Moodie at 6-2 190 lbs. was the man this night as he shot effortlessly from 25' or was impossible to contain off the dribble..Nearly all defenders who tried to check Cedric were turned away in embarrassment.. Even the big time talented Kilgore was unable to use his taller and longer frame to stop his former teammate at South Bend Washington....Basically,Moodie has proven to Darmetries and all other younger players that you must daily work at both your mind, body and spirit in order to continually elevate your game..Pat Magley's Christian program undoubtedly had a great influence on Cedric Moodie's development.Being on the five year plan,Cedric still has two years of eligibility remaining..With the 25 pound muscle gain since High School,Moodie is equipped to now take on a much larger scoring role for Ball State..Now that Duane Clemens has graduated,Moodie will have every opportunity to now lead the team..His eye is certainly focused on the future as he told IBN that,"Keep an eye on me -I will show the world that my game will be legitimate NBA point guard material."After seeing the huge leap in ability since his prep days, Cedric Moodie is right on schedule to achieve that dream.. Kilgore's game is a sweet jumper to 25' and the high major quicks and handles that have had Purdue salivating for his services ..Kilgore is special in that at 6-5 200 lbs. -his hi rising quickly released jumper is impossible to cover..His pull ups are strong and every angle or spot on the court is his launching pad..The fact that he can make plays when all others break down is so valuable to any offensive system...Even when he is defended strong with his shot hotly contested, a coach or teammate still believes his shot will fall....Kilgore tells IBN that he will definitly sign in the early period with Purdue or UNLV.. Once again Kilgore plans to meet with Purdue to decide his future..Mr. Kilgore tells IBN that he will make a decision soon..He further could not believe that people actually think that IBN or any other publication was swaying his decision..."No one but myself and family is ever involved in College choice decisions "-stated Kilgore..

Darmetries Kilgore close to deciding between UNLV and Purdue
The night and day programs are probably the finalists for Kilgore services..The NBA oriented UNLV and the team oriented Purdue are complete contrasts...UNLV players become professionals and Purdue players win team championships...The former South Bend Washington Star had no publication behind him his senior year other than IBN.Tyler asst. Matt Javit asked for a Kilgore visit after he read IBN...Tyler signed Kilgore and he scored 19 ppg. for them as a freshman...After receiving hype that he is NBA ready, Kilgore has attended camps realizing that he needs a four year school before he meets that big challenge..
He also has been playing four days per week at Pat Magley's gym in South Bend with 2001 Purdue recruit Brandon Mcknight and other top South Bend players..Remember Mcknight earned his scholarship offer being showcased with Spiece Central Stars and he has basically been a no show ever since..Scheduled to play in the Ft. Wayne Summit ,only time will tell if he can work it in his schedule...Yesterday evening Kilgore spoke with IBN Concerning his tough decision ." I really want to play the season out before I make a decision but all of South Bend seems to want me at Purdue."Keady has seen me play at Magleys gym and they followed me in Oklahoma," stated Kilgore.Keady has told Kilgore that he will have the green light at Purdue..Green Light as in "Glen's " green light or the light that no one else has ever had ?? Of course that is just a sales pitch....When we asked Kilgore if he was planning to be the first guard at Purdue to ever be in the NBA ,Kilgore responded -"No one else has ever made it from Purdue ?" Not to our recollection in the past 20 years ..Certainly an elite prep like Kilgore should say, "Hey- I will prove to you that I can win for a team -sacrifice my individual game and still end up playing in the league." Kilgore is going to make a decision soon and it will have nothing to do with how current NBA people view his potential...The only legitimate question Mr. Darmetries Kilgore will ask in two years is this--Am I better off now that I played for this College program;or, should I have played for a program with a different style of basketball ?? Is Purdue the best fit for him or is UNLV a better fit ?? If he would wait and play his sophomore season at Tyler, he would be exposed to many other high major programs where he might feel even more comfortable ..Kilgore is faced with a big decision that will mold the future of his personal and professional career..We hope he chooses the path that is best for him..We are just left wondering-What's the BIG RUSH ??

IUPUI Jaguars reload with Junior College Guards
Head coach Ron Hunter recently received an administrative vote of confidence when he was granted a five year contract extension...Competing in the Mighty MID-CON has been anything but easy for the young NCAA D1 Program but coach Hunter has set a solid foundation upon which to build...This spring he signed three impact players from the Junior College ranks that will capably direct the team the next two years.6-2 Sylvester Allen and 6-0 Maurice Williams both played together at Cincinnati Woodward High School and then also the last two years at Cincinnati Technical Community College...Averaging a combined 36 points per game at Cincy Tech,Allen and Williams led the Jr. College to a 51-13 record the past two years..The third JUCO signee for Hunter is 5-11 Lance Williams from Kankakee (Ill.)Community College..Averaging 12 points per contest,Williams played along side Hammond's 6-7 Tyray Pearson and Gary's 6-5 Monte Gordon enroute to a fourth place finish in the D1 National Junior College Tournament that was held last March in Hutchinson,Kansas...
Like Butler and Ball State, IUPUI has one scholarship to give in The Class of 2001 ..Assistant coach Todd Howard has been canvassing the major national tourneys this July and we believe his favorite is 6-4 wing/strongman Kenneth Lampley/Gary Roosevelt.A fierce finisher around the basket,Lampley's left handed power game is virtually impossible to contain because he relentlessly attacks the basket with precise body positioning..We have seen his solid perimeter game but he never has been able to go outside since he has always been stronger than summer teammates -regardless of their height..
Remember, the Jaguars 2002 recruiting class begins with assistant coach Kevin Jones son- KJ,Jr. and his new legal brother 6-2 Greg Stone. Both the Juniors have academic work to do but we predict them to qualify in order to start for the Jaguars their Freshmen season..

Sunday-July 23 , 2000
Ball State and Butler both to be very selective with only one scholarship to each give..Even with the loss of high scorer Duane Clemons, Ball State is recruiting with the confidence that they truly do not need to worry about the class of 2001...They certainly hope to keep Johnny Miller in town as they did with similar native Chandler Thompson..But Miller must qualify first before anyone can offer the high flying guard...New Butler coach Thad Matta is a veteran of recruiting and also someone with only one scholarship to give until September. He previously signed Mike Monserez from Notre Dame .Matta is also awaiting word from the NCAA to see if Scott Robisch will receive the one year of eligiblity that they petitioned for..If Butler does not know before fall ,then the NCAA should grant the Bulldogs an extra scholarship..Both Butler and Ball State hope to quietly corral that one Big Time recruit that will help their programs return to the NCAA Tournament......

Saturday-July 22 ,2000
Purdue Assistant Jay Price in Tulsa, Oklahoma
Boiler Fans must applaud the efforts of Purdue to actually travel and view 6-5 South Bend Washington Grad Darmetries Kilgore shooting jumpers in the JUCO showcase...Kilgore has told many that he considers Purdue along with UNLV,Cincinnati and many other options...Kilgore has told many that his decision is not soon so Time will tell what this young man decides for his future...Stay Tuned !!
Evansville Basketball Club Wins NIKE Sophomore To Be Championship
Mike Thomas
of the legendary Evansville AAU program needed only eight players to win the recent Bloomington NIKE Sportsplex Jam Championships for Underclassmen .Enroute to the championship , they defeated :
Bloomington Red 64-51
Region Stars 69-51
Grand Rapid Storm 71- 59
Kalamazoo 71-49 and then-
They defeated the 3 state Tennessee Travelers 73-64 for the NIKE Tourney Championship.Completely out playing the hapless All Star production from Tennessee, Evansville was actually down by ten in the fourth quarter before they went on a 14-2 run that sealed the Championship for Southwest Indiana.Evansville spread the floor to preserve their victory, and when the travellers were desperate for victory--Evansville drained 14 of 16 freebies to negate the superficial Tennessee comeback...For 15 years now ,no one in Indiana has done a better job coaching and promoting players than Mike Thomas. He meshes the talent he has to annually upset the high budget All Star programs...His biggest task annually is to convince a parent that his first class program does not need free shoes or free plane tickets...What he needs and what all player participants need is good old fashioned parental involvement...Tragically, this special Sophomore To Be team he has may very well break up due to parents with no sense of loyalty--or due to parents seeking a free ride to nowhere... Mike does not have big posts so that will be the sales pitch of all the summer team vultures...You are a good guard that must play with a true post...PUHLEEZE!!!They have not the savvy or acumen to win like Mike's teams so they will attempt to recruit his teams with empty promises...Remember the empty promises that Central Indiana Clubs made to their players about going to Las Vegas ??Those teams did not participate out of broken promises to their players...Kokomo shooter Blair Crawford and his family had travel plans to Adidas Big Time and then his Indiana Select program inadvertently reneged on their team recruiting promise to the tourney...Similar superficial promises are daily made and unfortunately parents do not stay loyal to programs like Mike Thomas's Evansville Basketball Club.Mike Thomas is a throwback to everything that is good about amateur basketball...Players must earn their way and parents must pay their son's share of expenses involved in auditioning for the scholarship...
Mike Thomas by profession is a photographer and Truck Stop manager ..His spare time is helping Southwest Indiana athletes find scholarships. No one works harder in their region than Mike...Compete with Thomas as he works for helping a kid get a scholarship , and you will either lose or want to fight Mike...Thomas goes the distance for his athletes whether it entails late into August or even a year or more later for his players that seek college...Bottom Line is simple, the summer recruiting period was designed for people like Mike Thomas who would ethically be involved to direct youth...Problem is ,that too many people with self serving agendas want something from the youth....Education remains the mission and we hope Indiana parents of preps will not lose that focus.... Mike Thomas of Evansville has the rare focus in summer basketball that combines hoops great skill execution and a dedication to the next level of obtaining College Scholarships....Southwest Indiana Basketball is fortunate to have youth volunteer Mike Thomas !!!

Friday-July 21,2000
6-4 Aaron Patterson/Ben Davis
Possibly the strongest player in the Class of 2001 has apparently many questions about his future. The questions of course always come from arm chair observers. As we previously reported,Patterson will not qualify academically but he will pay his own way at Purdue in his freshman year. After that, he will be scholarshiped his final four years of college eligibility. Many question if the "tweener size " Patterson can play in the Big Ten...Aaron Patterson can play anywhere as an inside out explosive talent..Time will tell but Patterson himself tells friends that he will be leaving for Purdue regardless of the latest rumor jibberish..Stay Tuned !!

Glenn Keller and Lance Fleming To Lake Michigan College
The two members of Indianapolis Arlington High School's City Champions have signed national junior college letter of intents with Lake Michigan.Fellow Golden Knight Eric Durrett had previously signed with Danville CC and Sean Gillespie just recently qualified academically for NCAA D1 participation .We expected Gardner Webb to sign Gillespie, but that has not happened yet...Sean Gillespie is as talented a guard as there was in the class of 2000..Only time will tell what NCAA D1 program will benefit from his explosive wing game..

ATTENTION all IBN Junior College Clients!
Three extremely talented prospects are still available for the 2000-2001 season. We have knowledge of a solid playmaking point guard,an explosive -skilled small forward and a brutally strong 6-3 small to power forward..All IBN interested Junior Colleges should call our office today at :219-392-1586.
We Would Like to Apologize to All of Our Readers. We Inadvertently Erased Several Days of News.

In Step with Bob Huggins and Gene Keady. These Big Time College Coaches have been busy scouring Adidas Big Time Tourney in search of the next prep that will lead them to the NCAA tourney. IBN caught up with the Cincinnati Bearcat coach Bob Huggins to ask him how Merrillville native 6-8 Jamaal Davis was progressing. "Jamaal is working hard each day in the weight room, "stated Huggins. When asked if Jamaal's role would include significant minutes - Huggins replied, "As long as he continues to work hard - he will have to play. He can do so many things offensively for us. At 6-8, he passes, dribbles and shoots well on the perimeter." With the need for a wing and two posts in the class of 2001, Coach Huggins was busy commuting between the 15 BigTime gymnasiums, in hopes of finding the High level prep that has what it takes to become a Bearcat. East Chicago native, 6-6 Carlton Baker/Barton JC is a primary target. Baker is currently carrying a 3.2GPA after his freshman year, and he is expected to average 25-30 points per game next season at Barton.
6-5 Darmetries Kilgore of South Bend Washington and Tyler JC (Texas) are also on top of the Bearcats' list of wing recruits. With Baker capable of playing a quick big forward, both he and Kilgore would be enormous additions for the Bearcats.
In spite of rumors of the Bearcats recruiting a point guard, they are not looking for point guards in the class of 2001. For that reason alone, we expect 5-10 Eric Bush/Anderson/Barton JC to graduate from Barton this summer and then bolt for Bob Hill's Fordham program in New York.
With 5 scholarships to give in 2002, Gene Keady was evaluating 6-7 Justin Johnston of Merrillville. Keady was also in town to conduct a coaches' meeting to address the future of summer recruiting. "No levels of college basketball can afford to lose forums like this where 3500 preps can be evaluated in one week against each other", stated Keady. He further stated the NABC will present the NCAA with their proposals. Besides recruiting, Keady could not stop talking about Kenny Lowe/Gary Westside . "Kenny may prove the next three years to be our best player since Glen, "declared Keady.

Wednesday - July 19, 2000
Indiana Preps failed to advance past Final Forty. Twelve Indiana clubs entered the 312 team Adidas Big Time tourney. Only the Junior to be Indy Warriors reached the Final Forty before falling 87-81 to Derek Smith's stars of Kentucky. The talented Warriors "picked up" only upperclassmen, Akeem Abdullah/Lawrence North and Maurice Barr/Arlington for the National tourney. The 5-8 Abdullah is a solid playmaker, and the 6-3 240lb, Barr is a low post behemoth. The Warriors quartet of 6-4 Marques Bennett/Brebouf, 6-3 Tyler Clevenger/Winchester, 6-8 Delco Rowley/Arlington and 6-4 Blake Schoen/Benton Central anchored the Warriors in each game. Bennett's playmakes are superb, the Warriors in seemingly effortless fashion. Craftly defensively, Bennett scores 6 per game "ripping" the opponents in bounce passes. Potentially much better than Ball State signee brother Michael, big conference schools will compete for the smooth state champion Brebeut Brave. Clevenger scored 24 in the final game off several pull up jumpers around the lane. Overall, his game is very solid off the dribble. He is equally adept at slashing and also "seeing" the open man for assists! Clevenger's treyball is now a legit triple threat, and he may very well be the most productive player in the Class of 2002. 6-8 Rowley has played sparingly due to Seventh Day Adventist committments. Like his fellow Arlington 'mate' 6-9 Babo Serge Christian, Raw is the best way to describe Delco. He has no clue how to block out or position defensively but his vertical explosion and physical gifts are second to none not only in Indiana but also nationally. At this time, Delco is a child compared to Sean May but with work. Rowley truly will one day sit in the Green Room with May during the NBA Draft.
6-4 Blake Schoen scored 28 in the final game including 2 treys. Barton Central's leading scorer as a sophomore is a non stop moving lefty scoring machine that is best flashing to the ball in open areas. Schoen is just a good player at this level that must become a pure shooting guard prospect. No one in the class plays harder than Blake Schoen in the class of 2002, so we predict he will become a ZG College prospect.
Super Shooter 6-2 Antwan Alexander/Arlington was sidelined the final game with a pulled quadricep muscle. Alexander rehabbed thru two knee surgeries with a plus 40" vertical so we expect him to be back on the court soon. Indiana entries Municipal Gardens and SYF were both sent home after lopsided losses. Spiece Northwest lost 85-84 in overtime to California, and Spiece Central was battered by DC Assaut 76-65.
Bob Huggins, Gene Keady and Sonny Vacaro interviews are NEXT. STAY TUNED!!!

Tuesday - July 18, 2000
Indiana Assistant Mike Davis currently is awaiting word from Tulane University on the status of his interview for the vacant head coaching position. "No news is good news "Davis told Monday IBN at this week's Adidas Big Time tourney. This morning Davis leaves the interview for the Delaware head coaching position that became vacant when Mike Brey was named Notre Dame's Head Coach. Davis was exclusively at the Adidas tourney in order to follow the progress of top target Donald Perry of Louisiana. Perry will visit Bloomington, IN the first week of August or at the end of July after the Los Angeles tournament. If Perry cannot committ to the Hoosiers, then Davis will work at bringing back 6-7 Kei Madison. Also there is no merit to the rumors that Indiana has interest in any two guards or small forwards.

NIKE UPDATE ON INDIANA PLAYERS- Garry Crone
Through Saturday evening's action at the NIKE Camp, all the Indiana players are playing really we.. Not spectacular, but certainly more than holding their own against the nation's best. Following is a report (no particular order) on each player for Saturday 7/8/00. (Note: Heights and weights were taken by NIKE WITHOUT shoes on July 5)
Sean May (6'7"/254lb.) Sean played extremely well in Saturday's action. He continues to show why he'll be a national Top 25 player in the Class of '02. Defensively, Sean patrolled the middle in a 2-3 zone and played it very well. He was active offensively in the paint and showed excellent mid-range touch. As usual, Sean was a force on the defensive glass. IU will be tough (impossible?) to beat for this super.
Kyle Hankins-(6'2"/159lb.) played much better Saturday than he had in practice scrimmages earlier in the week. Looked for his shot a little more and drained a couple threes. Handled the point flawlessly and played solidly throughout the whole day. Xavier (with Head Coach Skip Prosser looking on) likes Kyle a lot but rumor has it that IU may also be taking a look.
Dennis Coutee-(6'4"/196lb.) Dennis showed signs of getting a lot more active and playing the total game on Saturday night! Let's hope this continues as Dennis has all the tools needed to be a big, big time player. He occasionally displayed his sweet, long range stroke on Saturday that everyone loves about his game. Stay tuned! Iowa, Louisville, Purdue, and a host of others continue chasing.
Chris Thomas-(6'0"/166lb) This leading candidate for Indiana Mr. Basketball in 2001, is certainly doing nothing to hurt himself in that regard. Matt Doherty had to like watching his future guard running the show from the point position Saturday night (assuming Doherty isn't at U of North Carolina). Now if Doherty could only land someone like Thomas" NIKE teammate-7'0" Superstar Tyson Chandler from California-to go with him!
Andre Patterson-(6'6"/195lb. Former Indiana High School player now residing in Los Angeles, CA was simply awesome Saturday afternoon. After playing on the low block at Fort Wayne Concordia, Andre left little doubt that he could also play out on a wing at the next level. Coaches from Iowa, Michigan, UCLA, and others along the front row had to take notice of this as well. Saturday night's performance wasn't quite as outstanding as earlier in the afternoon, but it was still solid none-the-less. The state of Indiana's loss is certainly California's gain.
Chris Hill-(6'2"/165lb) We were unable to catch Chris in action on Saturday, but we will provide an update on a later report.
IBN "Rumor of the Day" NIKE Camp-Assistant Indiana Basketball Coach and chief recruiter Mike Davis is rumored to be a candidate for the now vacant Tulane Head Coaching job. Stay tuned!

Zach Randolph Academically Qualifies !!
America's best prep this 2000 season has been declared eligible to play the 2000-2001 season at Michigan State.Marion's gentle giant appealed to the NCAA and won the right to play his freshman season at East Lansing.
Celebrations are huge tonight at MSU as Zach's court presence will guarantee the Spartans contention for another National Championship..

1997 Calumet High School graduate 6-9 Deshawn Parks has signed with Lee University (Tennessee). The shot blocking, treyball shooting Parks is a huge addition to Coach Rick Hughes NAIA program.
Gardner-Webbof Boiling Springs,North Carolina moves to NCAA D1 next season. With five Indiana natives on their roster this season,GW returned to Indiana this year and signed 6-5 Chris Wiggins/Warsaw.This week we expect them to also sign 6-3 Sean Gillespie/Arlington.Sean recently qualified academically by attending Summer school.Gillespie led Arlington to the City Championship.

The Bloomington Red Hoosier Shootout Tips- Off tomorrow at 12 noon. Most of Indiana's Top College prospects will be demonstrating their potential for College Basketball in the first day of the NCAA open Recruiting period..Dozens of college recruiters will be converging on the Indy Indoor Sports Park in hopes they can find that one recruit that will mesh into their program.Click on the purple Hoosier Shootout box for the schedules of all the Indiana teams .

Eddie Ford's Kentucky Hoopfest
The schedule cannot be found in a mailbox but we have located the roster of teams and pool play schedule at:
www.sportscombine.com
Game dates are July 11-13 at the Kentucky Fairgrounds in Louisville,Kentucky.Annually, the tournament is supported by Indiana teams as over half of this years 55 teams are from Hoosierland..Those teams with the good fortune of being successful in the Hoosier Shootout, will have to forfeit their entry in Kentucky as the Shootout finals are the same day as the opening play in Kentucky.Unbelievably, these two venues of college exposure are unable to coordinate their schedules for the benefit of the youth involved. As always,IBN will keep you informed of all recruiting developments. For further Kentucky Hoopfest information, call Eddie Ford at: 270-322-8717

Indiana Dominates Sophomore To Be AAU Nationals.
Just when we thought the Class of 2002 was extremely deep, The class of 2003 is demonstrating much more depth in Kingsport,Tennessee .Four Indiana teams have advanced to the final 16 of the championship tourney...The dead eye shooting Evansville Basketball Club has played the best of all Indiana entries as they had to defeat Virginia,Atlanta Celtics,Kentucky and Boston Massachusetts enroute to the final 16..Their next test will be huge as they are pitted against the always explosive champion from New York City-The Gauchos.Regardless of reputation and what should happen, whenever a Mike Thomas Club is expected to lose--they usually prove to all observers that there is always a chance when you can " shoot the lights out." That has always been Southwest Indiana's forte-Shooting the treyball. No team has ever done it better than this Evansville Team. The other Indiana Clubs representing Indiana in the Championship final 16 are :
Spiece Gym Rats Central
Indiana State Champion-Bloomington Heat
Indiana Black Expo
We will have more later as the National Championships progress.Stay Tuned !!

1999 Gary Westside graduates 6-5 Mariel Harris and 6-6 Orlando Edwards have taken their high major potential game to Treasure Valley Junior College in Ontario, Oregon. Harris is a" rim sitter "with huge potential if he chooses to develop offense skill.Edwards is better offensively than Harris and he could be a Bigtime small forward if he graduates from the school.High major schools should chart the progress of both these huge prospects..Hopefully, both will be 2001 graduates...

High Major Prospect 6-8 Matt Kiefer/Evansville Mater Dei
Our first report was that the small town Cynthiana,Indiana stud had broken a bone in his foot..Today we learned from Mr. Howard Kiefer (father) that his foot was not broken but was severely sprained..Matt will be out of action one more week and then resume play in the July 11-13 Eddie Ford Kentucky Hoopfest. His Warrick County AAU State Champion team will then play in the BCI National Championships in Colorado Springs, Colorado from July 24-29...Stay Tuned !!

Indianapolis Lawrence North Update
No one in Indiana prep basketball has done a better job successfully representing his High School than Jack Keefer .
The LN teams are legendary for their exciting Championship brand of basketball. The 1989 state championship with Eric Montross and Todd Leary was a display of coaching genius...
Converse Indiana native Jack Keefer actually coached North Carolina State's Monte Towe when Jack was at Oak Hill.
Anyway,Senior To Be point guard Jesse McClung, Jr. is like most LN basketball athletes that have moved in from other areas so to be a part of something successful.
Ironically, Jesse would have been a state champion if he did not move from Marion. A special point guard from the stand point that the lefty has huge athleticism and good playmaking skill.Consistency in both his shot and decision making is the question that he must answer to both first day callers-Indiana State and Ball State.
If he does have an answer, many more colleges will come calling this July...
Jesse tells IBN that Terre Haute South's 6-6 Sophomore To Be Chaz Spicer is the latest athlete to move-in to the Northeast Indianapolis school...
Chris Hill shoots for the Wildcats and throws touchdowns for the football team. His college basketball interest has been from high major to mid-major...Several conflicting reports "muddy" the true sincere interest for his basketball talent.Just playing at NIKE will draw High interest but we expect a mid-major school will sign him unless he chooses to play college football.

Wednesday-July 5 ,2000
NIKE All American Camp Tips-Off.
Located on the campus of IUPUI in Indianapolis,Indiana-The camp officially begins today with the National Prep registration. The participants will be assigned a team and then compete live in full court scrimmages.Academic classes are conducted throughout the week in order to stress the importance of preparing for the rigors of college academics. Saturday marks the start of the open NCAA evaluation period.Recruiters will be lining the bleachers of the beautiful National Institute of Fitness and Sport as they compete for the services of the Nation's elite preps..Bloomington Red's Hoosier Shootout also begins Saturday at noon..Held at the Indy Indoor Southside Park, the facility is a mere 10 minute drive south on Bluff Road..Most organized recruiters easily shuttle their time between the two venues...Most of Indiana's Top College prospects will be either at NIKE or at the Hoosier Shootout.Game schedules for the Shootout can be accessed by clicking on the Hoosier Shootout square that we have displayed at the top of this news page.
Indiana Preps Participating in NIKE Camp include :
6-5 PF Trai Essex/Ft.Wayne Harding
6-5 2G Dennis Coutee/Jeffersonville.
6-8 (Jr.)PF Sean May/Bloomington North
6-2 2G Kyle Hankins/Bloomington South.
6-1 PG Chris Thomas/Pike.
6-1 2G Chris Hill/Lawrence North.
6-4 PF Aaron Patterson/Ben Davis.
Huntington North's Sean Kline (Indiana) has decided to travel on an International team that plays in Australia and New Zealand.Warren Central's Will Caudle will be at the Play Academy At Mount Holyoke College with Leon Petty/Cathedral.Gary Westside's talented Junior to be athletes 6-0 PG Brandon Cameron and 6-10 PF Chris Hunter will both be participating in the Adidas ABCD camp.

Junior To Be AAU National Championships.
Detroit,Michigan is the annual site for the junior to be National Championships. With nine Indiana teams entered, even the deep class of 2002 was stretched too thin..Spiece did not have the necessary playmaking leader..The Indy Warriors and Ohio Valley did not have strong enough frontcourts.. State Champion Warrick County's hopes were dashed early when high major prospect 6-8 Matt Kiefer/Evansville Mater Dei broke a bone in his foot.Spiece Pistols played one bad game in the tourney but unfortunately it was the first round of the Tourney where they fell to the Michigan Munstangs.Winning their next five games in the consolation bracket,The Pistolsfinish the highest of all the Indiana teams with the 8th Place National Finish.
Warrick County fought hard with out Kiefer and they clawed their way to a 12th Place National Finish.
The Michiana,Carmel Pride ,NWI and Indy Warriors all reached the quarterfinals of the "Classic consolation Tourney " before heading home in defeat.Notable performances for the week include Elkhart Memorial's Quenwel Young's 27 points for MBA and Benton Central'sBlake Schoen's 34 hustle points for the Indy Warriors.Schoen's total also includes a 75 foot jumper that he swished !!

Kyle Hankins to NIKE camp !!
Monday Kyle received a NIKE Camp invitation for the Indianapolis event sceduled to begin Tomorrow. The Bloomington South prep apparently was on the waiting list for the prestigious event...After leading Bloomington Red to the state AAU championship,Kyle has been receiving a great deal more recruiting interest.Xavier is his favorite school at this time..He unofficially visited Skip Prosser's program and came away excited about the team, new arena, and campus..He has also unofficially visited Iowa and Dayton..Oklahoma,Rutgers,Marquette,Nebraska,Indiana State,Evansville and Ball State also have all made phone contact with the sharpshooter..."Keeping all my options open,"Kyle tells IBN that he will play thru July with Bloomington Red on the NIKE Circuit and possibly make a decision in September..Hankins also expresses an interest in Indiana but the Hoosiers are seemingly in search of depth at the point position..Ironically,Hankins was asked by The General after his sophomore season if he was interested in becoming a Hoosier. Stay Tuned !!

Ball State Finalizes Their Staff in Grand Fashion !!
New Head Coach Tim Buckley made hugely productive decisions with his recent assistant coach hirings..To begin with he retained Scott Bunnell from the previous Cardinal staff.Bunnell is that detail " X and O " guy that just " gets things " done. Every program needs his nose for detail and many current Head Coaches in America received their promotion for that reason.Buckley then decided to double team Chicago in recruiting since Chi Town has been so good to past Cardinal teams..Realizing after ten years of coordinating recruiting at both Ball State and Marquette,Buckley knows College Basketball is a players game and your assistants had better have a rapport with players...Buckley hired first Angres Thorpe from D2 Lewis University and then former Wisconsin standout Tracy Webster(1994)..Both men have huge contacts in Chicago !! Expect the best from Chicago to now be considering Ball State if they are not seriously considering Depaul or Illinois..With recent windfalls like Valparaiso's committment from Kenneth Harris ,MAC schools that can now recruit like Ball State- may also begin gaining the huge High Major committment that usually goes to a larger Conference..As always, Time will Tell !!!Stay Tuned.

Monday-July 3 ,2000
6-10 Chris Hunter /Gary Westside.
The talented (Class 2002) post performer has that all important "huge upside "of potential. We have seen him perform several times and his ability to put the ball on the floor, pass and shoot to 17' is very advanced for a young player his size...We talked to Chris today before his departure to the Adidas Camp. "Doctors tell me I have 2 more inches to grow,"Hunter remarked.Truly he will be a huge prospect if that occurs in addition to some muscle mass gain.Hunter says he is hitting the weights hard at his High School and also eating as much as he can...His favorite schools are Duke,North Carolina,Cincinnati and Iowa..When asked what in state schools he liked - he mentioned Purdue. What about Indiana??He said ,"I am wide open to them and all schools at this time."He has met the Purdue staff while attending the Purdue camp.Even though his Bloomington Red summer team is often on the Indiana campus-he has never unofficially visited the program..After attending the Adidas camp,Hunter will tour July with The Bloomington Red NIKE Travelling squad.Stay tuned for more Chris Hunter News!!

In Step with Zach Randolph.
Ever since "Zeebo" and his Marion Giants dominated the Indiana high school State Championship tourney, the big fella has been non stop on the Go..He was MVP of the prestigious McDonalds All-American game,he was easily the best player in the NIKE summit International games and The All-American NIKE classic in Louisville..Zach led all scorers in The Indiana/Kentucky All Star classic..Most would believe Zach could now relax and reflect on his huge accomplishments..Zach did not become the best player in America by relaxing and there are no Lazy Boy recliners in his immediate future. After the Indiana All Star affair,Zach headed to East Lansing to workout with his close friend Marcus Taylor..Zach then spent a few days in Indianapolis working out informally with Pacers Jeff Foster and Al Harrington...His next stop is reportedly California where he is scheduled to work Michael Jordans camp...After Zeebo spends a week working with the great one , he then is off to Miami where he will be trying out for a roster spot on the 22-under American team..Once he formally makes that squad he will be finishing the summer in Brazil as a representative of The United States of America...No, Zach Randolph did not win Indiana's Mr.Basketball title..He dominated every aspect of prep basketball where he could control the outcome..He could not control the Indiana voters and he knows that and is at Peace with that fact...He also knows that as he enters Michigan State this September- Zachary "Zeebo" Randolph was America's best in the class of 2000 !!

Sunday-July 2 ,2000
Terren Wilson Update. The savvy playmaker that led Warren Central to the Indianapolis Marion County Crown ,has been offered a scholarship by Northern Illinois coach Brian Hammel. As the July open NCAA evaluation period nears ,many major college programs are trying to receive early committments.Wilson may very well committ in a day or so -or he may "play the July period out." Weighing your options in recruiting is always "a crap shoot."Should I committ or should I wait? Obviously a player cannot go wrong in a quality program like NIU;but, when at least a dozen other programs of mid-major size has expressed serious interest-understandably, Wilson must wonder if he should take his time and schedule home visits. If Wilson does wait then NIU may also not be able to wait for him...To cover their point guard needs-they may take the next best player that wants to committ.
Big ,difficult decisions now face Terren Wilson and many other Indiana Top College Prospects...

Lonnie Randolph/Merrillville.Iowa State seeks an official visit from the two sport star. The most serious recruiting is for his bigtime quarterbacking skills at this time..The superb point guard will be kicking off his July travels at The Hoosier Shootout.
Jake Wiltrout/Plainfield.Drake and Belmont now join Indiana State,Dayton,Bowling Green and Ball State in recruiting Wiltrout.
6-4 Jeremy Peckinpaugh/Shenandoah.
Elon and Loyola Maryland have called the rangy small forward.

High Major Class of 2002 Post Prospect Justin Johnston.
The 6-7 lanky, rangy, broad shouldered Merrillville center may have the most potential of anyone in the class.Physically active ,agile and explosive Johnston just needs offensive refinement of his raw skills..Kenyon Martin is his favorite player thus Cincinnati has been his favorite school. He also likes Michigan State,Purdue and Indiana at this time..Recruiters may follow his progress this July as he travels with James Dye's SYF club.

Saturday-July 1 ,2000
Indiana State University recently hired Coach Royce Waltman thru the 2007 season...With contract security now through his 65th birthday, maybe now coach will return his recruiting focus to Indiana preps..Indiana natives Michael Menser/Batesville and Matt Renn/Silver Creek are the heart and soul of the Sycamore success....The remainder of the roster is out of state athletes....Most troubling is the fact that Indiana class of 2001 has many quality point guards but ISU is once again going elsewhere...They are apparently close to receiving a committment from a Kansas City prep..Class of 2001 Incoming Senior News.
This senior class always becomes disjointed this time of year as summer programs begin reneging on their annual trip committments to parents in July.
Indiana Select will not be playing in Las Vegas even though parents of Blair Crawford /Kokomo and other team members had made their travel plans to the HUGE College exposure tourney in 'Vegas....Plan to see the sharpshooting Crawford firing his bombs in a Spiece Central Jersey at Las Vegas....
5-8 Crawford teammate Gordon Morgan is also a good prospect but he will also play only from July 8-13 in both Hoosier Shoot -out and Louisville prep....6-2 Blair Crawford/ Kokomo.
The sharpshooter has received phone contact this past Wednesday from Elon,Princeton ,South West Missouri State,Akron and Kent State....Blair is also a NCAA D1 quarterback prospect in football so he has big decisions to make...Another two sport athlete with sport decisions to ponder is 5-8 Otis Shannon/ Cathedral.Indiana's best football player the past two years, we expect the 185 lb. strong man to either run the pigskin at Indiana or Notre Dame.Shannon owns the state record for most yards rushed in a single game-498 !! The fiery competitor can be summed up with the words of the tatoo on his shoulder,"Fear No Man ."No one in Indiana competes harder than Otis Shannon !!

6-9 Jerod Adler of Adams Central scores 46 points vs. Team Indiana in two games....The intelligent post has visits to Marquette and Bowling Green planned in the next week..Adler is the man to watch in the " Hoosier Shootout " as he will receive the time to prove his mettle..Stay tuned as The big fella may decide early.....

6-7 Michael Dolezal/Michigan City Marquette has received phone calls from Harvard, Columbia,Naval Academy and St.Joseph's College. He also is looking for a place to play after the Hoosier Shootout as his Spiece Northeast team is apparently disbanding in favor of "family reunions ." Why do you play nearly every weekend since April, in meaningless Games and then not compete every possible day in the open recruiting evaluation period ???6-5 Jay Dawson /Benton Central has received calls thus far from Belmont,Central Florida and Marquette.
6-4 David Teague/Pike is the state's most underrated player..A cannot miss mid major type cut from the CJ HILL/BEN DAVIS cloth..Coach Darner wants him with Indy Metros so he will not be travelling with Spiece.Only Tennessee Martin has been smart enough to contact Teague....

Clint Swan rejects Valparaiso offer.
With the opening created by the resignation of Steve Flynt , many thought that Swan was the perfect "gets things done " type of coach that Valpo is only ever interested in..Problem is always the fact that the job is part time...Swan was considered a "shoe in by many " because of the fact that Andrean salary is so low for any teacher or coach..Bob Buscher, if you remember left Andrean for A poor basketball situation at Whiting because the compensation was twice for him as a public School Teacher as that of a Parochial teacher receiving minimal income....
Ft.Wayne Hardings 5-9 PG DARYL BURNETT lights up Timmy Knights Team Indiana for 35 !! The diminutive graduating senior took no prisoners this night at the campus of St. Francis College as he torched Knight's Incoming Indiana travelling team of recruits .Burnett is the total package at point guard !! He was a late qualifier needing a grade in a Core class while he always had the necessary ACT score. Burnett received a late offer from NCAA D1 Gardner-Webb , but he thought they had too many guards ahead of him....Daryl states that he plans to attend National JC power Owens Community College for one year and then hope to be re recruited by Division Ones in a year...Burnett and IBN favorite 6-5 Trai Essex led Ft. Wayne Harding to a semi-state runnerup finish vs. two time Class 2A state champion-- Westview....

Damon Bailey Retires From Basketball
Indiana High School's All Time leading scorer (3134) and State Champion at Bedford North Lawrence High School, has officially hung up his sneakers in favor of spending more time with his wife and daughters.Ben Smith of the Ft.Wayne Journal Gazette reports that the former Mr.Basketball will continue operating his statewide summer basketball camps in addition to managing his filter distribution business...Bailey first made national news as an 8th grader when Bob Knight proclaimed that he could start for his Hoosiers at IU. After a stellar career at Indiana, Bailey has played in Europe and for the Ft.Wayne Fury of the CBA..

Gary Steelheads Officially Name Frank Kendrick Their Head Coach.
The newest edition of the Continental Basketball Association has hired the former Purdue Assistant to lead their new franchise into their inaugural 2000-20001 season.Former Lew Wallace athlete Earl Smith has been hired as team General Manager..Former Gary Roosevelt and NBA starWinston Garland will be assisting Kendrick...The remainder of the Basketball Management Team should be announced in the next month.
